What to do with an outboard tank over winter

Evening All. Hope everyone has had a good winter.

Slowly starting to contemplate where to go this season but thought I'd share a novel use for the outboard tank over winter:

Replacement tank for the genny.

Have had the genny for quite a few years as a hand me down from my father who Bought it during the 70s blackouts I think. Decided I ought to at least make sure it works. The fuel tank was rotten and the lines full of muck.

Cleaned it all up, ditched the tank and with ethanol in fuel there was no point in a new tank and having to drain it down everytime so I decided to replumb it to use the outboard tank as there would never be a usage clash.

After a liberal dose of MEK through the lines and carb it fired up easily and ran perfectly.

Actually, I tell a lie. I had been nearly killing myself for about half an hour using the pull cord to no avail when the phone rang and I decided it would be smart to have a break and answer it before I gave myself one of those midlife heart attacks. It was my father and I proceeded to proudly tell him that I was recommissioning his old generator but it was a bugger to pull start, to which he replied that I was some kind of bloody idiot and should connect a car battery and just turn the key!!! Well, I didn't know it was that fancy. 5 mins later the battery is connected and it fires perfectly.

Good dual use Tim, and something to use any leftover E10 on at the end of the season.

Indeed Steve. You also get a proper seal with an outboard tank so almost no chance of any phase separation. It can just sit there in case you need the genny and then in Spring get poured into the mower.

It was quite pleasing how all components seemed made for each other and another e10 risk dispatched with.

My gen seems to cope with old fuel as well.
Do you reckon we could fit a small solar panel and wind turbine to the frame, then we could go off grid, and smile at increased energy costs?
You can only dream!

I have over 30 liters of ethanol free pre-mixed with 50 to 1 sitting in my garage from last November that I don't know what to do with, and I refuse to put them in my outboards.

It will be fine in your outboards, otherwise use it a bit at a time in your car petrol tank. Even with a catalytic converter, it's ok or if you are wary keep to about 500:1.

For some reason every other engine on the planet seems to do alright on old fuel apart from outboards.
