As has been said many times before, (several times in this thread) the Bombard 380 Aerotec with a 25hp 2 stroke is rated best in its class, performance wise, by most here on Ribnet. But almost any RIB will out perform it.
The Zodiacs, Honwaves, Suzumars etc all perform perfectly well in the conditions most SIB owners will go out in. Only a few, and I'm not one, will go out in more challenging conditions.

SIBs are the cheap city cars of the boating world, you ain't going to get Ferrari performance;

for the price of a Fiat Panda.

So look at several in your price range and then decide what you like.
Remember, like cars, you can always trade it for a better one.

But as I say, only if you want to fit a Fish finder.
Wouldn't be too hard to make a bracket to go around the trim tabs. Besides, maybe they stop the odd bombard fill the boat up with back wash thing?

If you come up with a good design, patent it. You'll be able to afford a big RIB and somewhere to park it.

The bombard chucks up some water at speed. Very hit and miss in terms of the motors that do it. Mine (tohatsu 18hp 2s) does, but if you put a thin chock of wood under the clamps to raise them an inch then it's problem solved. I understand the bombard transom is a tiny bit too short so the engines run deep, kicking up water. It's not really a big deal in my opinion as the bit of wood totally sorts it.

I think the water spray issue is down to the unique design of the Bombards transom, but since its this shaped transom that gives it the performance advantage, we all work round the problem.

Short shaft engines have a 15" shaft as standard but on some of the bigger tiller engines the shaft length can creep up to 17". On a standard transom its not an issue but on the Bombard its can cause some splashing over the back. If you search on here you will see some incredibly well designed and manufactured raised transom solutions, but a simple block of wood works just as well.

My 25hp Yamaha has a 17" shaft

You can see its just a little too long for the transom (the cavitation plate should be level with the bottom of the transom).

Just a block of hardwood, not as good as some others, but does the job for now till I get time to make a better solution.

The bombard transom/ hull shape is a distinct 'U' infront of the leg -- this allows water to flow in from either side of the U onto the leg - and up the back of the transom into the boat.

Most SIBS have a very flat '_' infront of the leg - meaning water has to try and flow 'up' - which is by definition harder for it to do.

Joe, just thought to help with your decision making, I would suggest possibly considering that you may be wanting to change things in a season or two anyway depending on how your relationship develops with your interests and not viewing the purchase as a long term commitment, so the suggestions from others around compromise and selling on later are all very valid. Many change boats and change engines for various reasons all too frequently as well as dipping in and out of other type of boat/watercraft ownership.

Looks like the bombard aerotec is best air deck sib but not cheap!! I was considering a Honda Honwave with aluminium hard bottom. How do these perform and what is the set up time? Could one set this up and take down for the weekend every time? Only thing I see with these is most people trailer them. If I am to do this I may as will go for a light weight rib. Like a small rib eye???? Thoughts ..

The best way to do this will be test them!
