Funnily enough we received an offer for the waterside hotel on Ullswater the other day which I looked into and said to Mrs F that would be a good location to trial the Elling... before we knew it had become trapped at source.
Have a great time... never mind the weather if it turns a bit.

We're going to really enjoy it, just being away will be such a nice change.
Long time since I've been in the Waterside hotel, probably 25 years! From memory it was a really nice hotel. I know it's got a decent pontoon/jetty, make an ideal base for when you get your Elling.

Yes I looked at the images of the jetty and thought ideal.

Seems like everyone is off to Ulswater. We are going also. Do you need any sort of licence or permit to use a SIB with outboard on Ulswater ?

No licence or permit needed, 10kn speed limit which is "enforced", but I've never seen the ranger on a weekday. Providing your sensible, slow around Glenridding and Pooley Bridge and stick below the limit on the northern shore, your pretty much OK everywhere else.
When are you going and where are you staying?

Thanks for that info. Is no licence required common on other lakes. Being mainly a Coastal and Norfolk Broads boater I thought most inland water ways needed some sort of licence.
Going in early June.

You only need a license for Windermere, which I think is £35 for the first year and £25 for subsequent years. You'd have to apply a few weeks before you went, registration number must be displayed and speed restrictions are enforced very rigidly. Think its £14 to launch everywhere on Windermere, there are a few places you could launch for free but are too difficult to describe where thay are
Coniston is the only other water I'd take a SIB, no licence needed, think its £10 to launch at Coniston itself. There are a few places you could launch for free with a bit of a struggle over small walls, steep banks!
Although you can SIB elsewhere it's not worth the effort, too small and shallow, but fantastic for a lazy day in a canoe, your near enough to Derwent Water.
June is a good time to visit, but weekends will be busy especially Pooley Bridge, Glenridding and the north shore. You can launch at Glenridding, free to launch about £10 to park. Howtown, "free" to launch, difficult to park. Campsite at Pooley Bridge, think its £10 to launch/park but free if your camping there.

Many thanks for all that information. We will also take our Itiwit Canoe so very useful. I assume you are ok with 2 stroke outboards on the lakes ?

Had a few fantastic days on Ullswater, blue skies, sunny but very cold. The water was very quiet only saw 2 Ribs and a couple of SIBs both with electric motors. Lots of Sups and kayaks though.
The seats with back rests I made over lockdown worked better than I thought. Comfortable and took the pressure off the base of mine and Diane's back. Likewise with the bow box/seat, kept everything neat and tidy, added that little bit of extra weight up front when solo, and Isla (the dog) loved using it to get in and out of the SIB.
When I figure out how to upload videos, I'll post a couple I took of the trip, there's one Fenlander I think you'll be interested in seeing.

Hopefully I've figured out how to upload videos, if so, this is The Waterside Hotel on Ullswater. Right on the waters edge, fantastic views of Ullswater and the mountains around Glenridding and Patterdale. Has its own pontoon, couldn't see if there was an easy place to launch, however 1/2 mile up the lake is Howtown slipway.

A couple more videos of Ullswater. The first of Glenridding and Patterdale from Place Fell.

Great to see the images and videos. Your outfit really looks the business... OB sounds smooth and quiet too.

Did a bunch of "extended winter" jobs since the boat was laid up all of last season.
1. Made a nice carbon cover for the ignition system. Tidier, plus also keeps any water that comes through the hatch clear
2. Sorted out a decent bluetooth unit to connect the laptio wirelessly to the engine.
3. Installed a pair of CTEK charger indicators & connectors so it's easier to keep the batteries topped up. (Also have a pair of bluetooth battery sense units installed so I can keep an eye on their state of charge without taking the cover off)
4. Modified the bracket for the ignition sensor to give a bit more clearance - see the witness marks
5. Made new exhausts. Was my first attempt at TIG welding stainless. Not perfect, but OK, I think.
Did lots more jobs too, but limited to 5 pics per post.

Thanks David. It may be just my imagination, but the OB does sound quieter and appears to be smoother since I've fitted the new prop.

Nice one Matt, hopefully we will all get to use our toys more this year and have no time for fiddling (that's me) or projects like you.
What's with the tennis balls?

That's an 8-stack intake manifold, exactly like you used to get on the old hot-rods, dragsters & racing cars in the 60's and 70's.
It makes 2 noises:
1. A lovely induction noise as you open the throttle and unleash the motor
2. A very saddening sort of tinkling noise as you drop a small nut down them as it bounces past the throttle butterflies and ends up resting on the backside of an intake valve.
So the tennis balls are to prevent me dropping stuff into the engine intake.
They're also excellent for "noise abatement" when I forget to remove and the engine won't start.

Love Ullswater and Glenridding in particular. Stayed at Glenridding Hotel twice a year when my son was growing up. Many lovely walks and outings.
I'm going up there in July. Don't know about taking the boat though, we'll see.
That's me and Trev the salty sea dog on Ullswater in one of the hire boats.
