Yamaha Malta upgrade?

Hi All,

New to this... after ages of waiting I managed to pick up a fairly cheap deal on a used Sib and outboard..

The SIB is a Plastimo P240SL with a Yamaha 2HP (2B) Outboard cost £370 all in..

SIB has 2-3 patches but appears to have been repaired competently and doesn’t show any signs of leaking or air loss..

The Outboard also appears to be in good Nick, well it works!! I intend to get it serviced soon!

Took it out on the blackwater estuary yesterday evening for the first time, had a lovely time.. my sib is rated upto 4HP

The outboard I have weighs 10KG according to google.

I’m interested in the long run in maybe getting a Yamaha Malta as an upgrade

Couple of questions re the Malta 1. Is it a 3HP or 3.5HP and will the additional Horsepower make a significant difference in terms of speed.. or will added weight of the outboard as in carry to and from the car and on the boat mean the pro’s are effectively balanced with the con’s hopefully that makes some sense to people?

Hello,

I have a Yamaha Malta that I use as an aux on my 5 m rib and what a great little motor it is. However, it weighs a lot more then 10kg more around 20 but I have never weighed it, I also don’t know what the output is but were told when I bought it it was 3,5 hp.

It’s a very easy job to service yourself and you would learn a great deal, outboard in miniature!

I recently replace the fuel pump diaphragms, which improved the starting significantly I also do the water pump impeller every couple of years along with the gearbox oil ( annually) and the plugs. It’s very easy to run up in a large bucket.

When you get one I am sure you will be pleased.

David

The Malta was a 3hp (also known as the Yamaha 3A)

One of the best, if not the best small engine ever made
