1978 Yamaha 9.9 outboard fourstroke

I have just bought one of these as a replacement for my existing outboard that died. My old one was an electric start with an alternator and the new one is a hand pull. Does anyone know if the hand pull verisons are able to charge a battery?

Yamaha did build a 4-Stroke in 1978, but as far as i recall it was a motorcycle motor.

The serial number is F9.9AM 6G8UL 701023. Maybe the date is wrong but it is definately a 4 stroke

Most yamaha hand starts can be modified to give you a 12v output for charging etc but you'll need to buy and fit the kit to convert the 12v ac it produces to 12v dc and regulate the voltage etc.

Thanks for that Hamster! any idea how much this is likely to cost and would a yamaha dealer have the kit for such an old engine?

I did get a quote years ago for a similar size engine but can't remember the price. Give a yamaha dealer a call and give them your serial number and they will be able to tell you if they can supply what you need.

If your engine is a 4 stroke I very much doubt it was made in 1978

It is definitely a 4 stroker but Yamaha didn't introduce their first 4 stroke outboard until 1984
