Ahoy 👋
Hi guys and girls just thought I’d say hello before before crashing in with 150 question. I’m new to boating well being out on the water anyway I’ve painted canal boats for the past 15 years. I bought a 17ft Glastron speed boat last year and not knowing much about boats it was a bit of a spare of the moment thing ( midlife crisis as the wife called it) the cheeky 🐄 . Anyway that’s enough of my midlife crisis ha
The drum back plates on the axle are completely rotted out I didn’t notice when buying the boat (school boy error I know) I was buying a boat not a trailer 🤦*♂️ I’ve tried to find out what drums they are but had no luck snipe are trying to sell me a complete axle but the axle is perfect I just need complete drums shoes and I’ll be changing the cables better to be safe than sorry
Any help would be much appreciated
It’s a braked snipe trailer
Cheers
Steve

Steve, Autow make the axles for snipe, and i got a better price for my snipe trailer parts going direct to autow. Have a look at their site and give them a call, very friendly and helpful.

Glastron is a funny RIB isn't it
Post up some pics of how bad it is, it may actually be better to replace the whole axle, not from snipe though!
You may be better over on boatmad for boat related stuff FYI but lot of trailer knowledge on here to be had.

If your backplates are rotted drums won,t do you any good at all , you can buy new backplates for about 40 pls vat each but you still have to get them welded on which is not an easy task and with boat trailers the plates need to be galvenised after welding and thats not possibble as the process would melt the suspension rubbers
you will have to bite the bullet and buy a new axle ,probhably £400 ,just make sure you know the ...wheel stud pattern poss 100 pcd .........the centr to centre of the axle mtg brackets ..........the overhub dimension ,....and the carrying cap ,(poss 1300kg ) ,then just make sure you know the axle offered is galvanised , i know al-ko axels usually come with new brake cables and wheel bolts , if its one of those bent axles then i reckon they are history , old snipe poss knott or lew ways ,but if you know all the above parameters there are plenty who will compete on price

This guy says he has a replacement axle I just don’t want to buy something that’s not right or potentially dangerous I don’t really know what I’m looking at other then it’s a axle

Steve, has your axle got a makers plate on it with a serial number. My snipe trailer did, these axles were made by Peak trailers Ltd who are the factory of autow they make and supply to Snipe, they also supply Mersea Trailers. . I phoned them, gave them the axle serial number, they sent me a drawing of the axle, so i could tell it was the right one. And including postage to Ireland it was a lot cheaper than the ebay one.

I’ll have a look over the weekend as it’s parked at my dads house but I’m guessing it will do as it all looks original
