Hello from Leeds
Hi to everyone. Signed up to the site after experiencing Ribs for the first time in Jersey recently. We went out to Les Minquiers and had a blast. This was on an organised Rib trip but I would love to be able to do that myself. Totally new to this so i'm here to learn what I need to do to be able to do it, and what sort of Rib I would need to do it with. There is only 2 of us.
Cheers
Dom

Eeyup Dom, welcome t' Ribnet. Being a Yorkshire lad thall already 'ave a thick skin & a sense o'umour, thall need it on 'ere . Get ready to have the p155 ripped out of you & give as good as you get. Hang around a bit, read the forum & join in, don't be afraid to ask questions even if you think they are daft, otherwise thall learn nowt. Don't part wi any dosh until you've sought the wisdom of the collective. Listen to what they say, sort the good from the bad, laugh at the pi55 taking & you'll not go far wrong.

Hi Dom, and welcome.
I'm in Bingley and a n00b myself. This is the end of my first full season as a RIB owner, though I spent my youth sailing on Loch Lomond so reasonably familiar with boats in general.
I'd concur that establishing what your budget and intended usage are is key. As a fellow West Yorkshire boater I'd also say: you're going to be doing a fair bit of towing cos there's nowhere 'local' to boat. We've been to the Clyde, Ireland, and the Menai Strait (multiple times) this year and it really racks up the miles. Bear in mind if your trying to go budget that you'll need summat on decent trailer and that when you're towing it your fuel consumption will be crap. My Seat Exeo on the run down to Wales (mostly motorway) drops from 55mpg to 35mpg when towing. You're also going to need something capable of towing whatever you buy reasonably comfortably. There's loads of threads about the legalities/practicalities of towing.
I'd also say go and do your RYA Powerboat Lvl 2 course before you buy. It'll give you some more boat-time and it'll be fun. You can also do it somewhere more local and see if your still as keen on RIBing in an off-season Irish Sea as you were in the sunny channel islands. The initial setup costs of this game are quite high so you want to be sure you're going to enjoy it and get some use out of it.
Cheers,
CC

boats cost a fortune to buy and run, things do go wrong but im sure everyone on here would agree that its totally worth it when you get out to sea with nice scenery and wildlife and the odd refreshing wave breaking over the bow!

Thanks for the replies so far...
I've done some initial research on the PowerBoat Level 2 course and will be doing that shortly.
I'd be looking to keep the Rib at home in the garage or local to me. I have access to a large transport yard with storage indoor. It's only 5mins from home.
Usage wise we spend a lot of time on Jersey (holidays) and Anglesey and Windermere. We also have plans to visit Cornwall etc. I'd love to have something capable of a trip to Les Echrous or Les Minquires from Jersey and something capable of exploring the Cornish coast. I realise I won't be doing this straight away and will be gaining experience first.
Got a Rav 4 at the moment which will tow ok. Im a Mechanical engineer so happy to work on the boat if that's allowed? I'm used to expensive hobbies, have held a pilots licence for 7 years and spent a small fortune on flying. Nothing flash, just a 2 seater permit aircraft.
There are only 2 of us so I don't need something with lots of seats.
No idea on what I need to look at budget wise, what do you reckon from the above?
I drive arctics in a regular basis aswell (another hobby) so towing a trailer shouldn't be too taxing, hopefully
