Hello from Llanfairfechan, North Wales

Hello from Llanfairfechan, my friends and I passed our RYA PB2 with Phil Sharkey and Seawake back in July 2018.

We have just bought our first RIB after selling our 17 Foot Outhill Flying Fox. The RIB is a Ex-fisheries patrol boat, an Avon Searider 5.4 with a 90hp Tohatusu two stroke.

We are a member of Llanfairfechan sailing club and launch at the Slipway with most of the boating (and fishing) done around Puffin Island and the North East entrance to the Menai Straits.

We did a decent trip of 80 miles two weeks ago from Y Felinheli to Rhosneigr, then escorted twenty jet Ski's from Rhosneigr through the Swellies & the Straits to Puffin Island. It was somewhat successful as the intelligent Jetski's followed us as we were going through as the tide was dropping.

We got out passed Menai Bridge and around ten jet Ski's peeled off to the right going under Bangor pier 2.5 hours after high tide heading for Lavan Sands and Dutchman's Bank. We safely got to Puffin Island to see the Seals on the Northern tip to then get a phone call saying some of the jet Ski's were stuck on the sandbank (three hours after high tide).

Luckily no one was injured and no damage to the jet Ski's (except their pride).

It was a great day out and we would love to attempt an around Anglesey trip sometime soon in a flotilla of RIBs, I have done in the past when I was younger when my parents had Osprey Vipermax's.

Our vessel name is Merlin, crewed by Jacob, Matthew and myself (Harry) and we look forward to doing some trips out with group. Click image for larger version

Welcome to Ribnet.
Re. Round Anglesey. If you’re confident navigating the Swellies, going around the island shouldn’t be much of a challenge. It’s about 80nm, it can get a bit snotty in the overfalls around south stack, but nothing a 5.4m Searider can’t handle.

Hi Dave,

Yes, we are confident doing the swellies as we did one of our PB2 training days on the Straits and regularly go through when we can.

RE Around Anglesey, we thought doing it with other Ribs first time would be good in case of any difficulties and also to meet some of the community.
