Hello from North Yorkshire, I'm Don and new to this site/forum.

I've recently been retired (accident @ work), so I've had to park up the motorbikes and hang up my beloved mtb/road bikes and look for pastures new in my leisure time.

We have always had our family holidays (wife & 2boys) either in Pembrokeshire or on the Solway coast of Dumfries & Galloway. I've spent many hours with kids body boarding etc and always watching with envy the lucky ones in ribs and other pleasure/sport boats along those coastlines.. having fun, towing toys or fishing and bay hopping with beach towels and a cool box of goodies.

So now the time is right to get a float and having limited knowlage (unless you count being the son of an ex Royal Navy CPO)..? Turn my long held desire to get a rib. My initial thoughts where an inflatable Quicksilver type that can be packed away etc, but being close to the Yorkshire coastline and having seen the sea's whip up quickly I'm more inclined to focus on a rib as I can easily store something about 6mtrs including trailer...?!? (Friend of wife's family in Pembrokeshire has a Valiant 5mtr rib with seating for 6 I think. with a cool box in front of the console.. A frame and all the electrics, vhf, chart/fish computer etc), this is where my thoughts are at the moment anyway. I've also decided I need to do my RYA power boat 2.

So guys and gals.. any advice on any of the above is very welcome, in particularly a Valiant as described or something similar and also any recommendations for the power boat course either in yorkshire/Humber or Solway coast please.?

Thanks... Don

Hi Dom and welcome !
The first question will be what's your budget for the boat then people will give you some options 4-5m Rib sounds a good way to got and RYA pb2 is a great start.

Hello Jim, good question.. I started the Yorkshire way trawling ebay/Gumtree etc etc.. thing I've quickly noted is cheap means something not right or its being shipped on quick..!?

So I wasthinking between 3k or 4k.? But I think upto 7k is more realistic for a do it all rib capable of towing toys etc and having an auxiliary on the stern as my injured shoulder means no rowing for me..!

What is the nature of your Accident. If it means you can't ride a motorbike/pedal bike ... ... will a bouncy RIB hurt you?

Just wondering if you need to go for a few rides on a chop and see if its OK for you before you shell out $$

Welcome to Ribnet

You could try the Apollo Duck website to see what is around. You can create search criteria based on what you want.

There is a Ribcraft 585 on there including trailer for £7k. I can't vouch for it at all. The engines tend to be the really expensive part of the RIB, followed by tubes closely followed by everything else.

Electronics are useful but you can cope without them. A VHF is worthwhile and hand helds are good nowadays - you will need a VHF certificate which is a one day course.

PB2 is good and definitely worthwhile. You can get occasional deals on them. One of your Yorkshire compatriots booked one in the middle of winter which may have saved him a few quid. It also meant he didn't have to turn the heating on at home that day so a double saving.

My kids (2 and 10) really enjoy days out on the RIB (when working).

Good luck with your hunt.

Thanks Guy... lots of useful comments.

Shame I'm in an area of the country with limited dealer/traders with some choice 2 look at and get a feel for what's good and what's not...!?

Might be worth my while doing the PB2 at one of the many in the Solent as lots of competition and some throwing I the vhf course in the price, also more choice 2 check out some dealers stock.?
