Hello with a fishfinder mount question :-)

Hi,

I've just got myself a new 3.2m sib and 6hp outboard. Been out a couple of times inshore while on hols and looking to do more up in North Yorkshire where I live.

I also inherited a DragonFly 7 fishfinder and my first question of the forum is does anyone know if you have to use official mounts or if third party will work?

I ask because it came with the bit and ball which attaches to the device but not the other side which is probably screwed to my late Bros boat a long way from here.

Cheers!
Carl.

Hi not sure of the specifics of that mount and finder, but perhaps ebay could be your best friend.
Many cheap phone holders use a similar ball attachment set up that might fit.
Also not sure if you can mount direct on a console, say like my lowrance, without the mounting bracket. Which means you'd be open to use any generic ebay brackets.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge of your fish finder will come along soon.

If I understand correctly you have a ball on the fish finder screen, but not the socket? Measure the ball and if it is say a 1" that is super easy as it is a common size used by many brands, like "Ram Mounts".

Does your outboard have charging capabilities? If not I would strongly recommend modifying it to do so. Even with a larger AGM battery my fish finder would require charging over a weekend's worth of use.

Sounds like it could be a RAM mount.

Peter, the OP lives in the UK! How often do you think the weather would allow a weekends worth of use!

On a more serious note though Peter. I don't think the OP needs to invest in modifying a 6hp so it has charging capabilities.
I use my Garmin 45 with a a 7amp alarm battery (couldn't get a 20amp lithium battery at the time)
Even after using the pack (idea plagiarised from chipko) to inflate the SIB, I get approx 10 hours out of the battery, thats 2 - 3 days sibbing. If I was wild camping for a few days, I am sure I could make the battery last much longer by some judicious use of the chart plotter/depth sounder.

From Raymarine's website:
"Mount Anywhere
The Dragonfly's compact ball-and-socket mounting system makes installation simple. The mount is easy to upgrade to after market ball-and-socket mounting systems."
http://www.raymarine.com/en-gb/our-p.../dragonfly-pro

Couple of days use out of an alarm type battery on my own Dragonfly 7 when used off my main boat on reservoir hire boats. (Yuasa NP18-12B)
Would probably last longer but I've never tried.
