Hi from Hat Overboard
Hello Folks,
frequent browser of Ribnet here and creeping ever closer to taking the plunge with a dirty big capital purchase for more distance cruising (under experienced and a few crappy tickets) .... in need of good practical advice which this site seems to have in abundance. Based in Donegal Ireland with the NI Coast and N/W Coast Scotland at our back door. Time to explore "within 20 miles of a safe haven" with the family etc. Have an idea of what craft I'm after on a v. tight budget of 6-8k...6.5m min. with probably 150HP min ... due to Atlantic exposure, rough water handling and fuel economy would be priority....loads of questions to follow re. vessel type and engine combination.
"The right tools and humility for the job, always. No use blaming
the next clart that appears on the scene"

Welcome to RIBnet, neighbour. We cruise the same stretch of water - where do you plan to launch from?
You're asking a lot on the budget, but if you're handy with engines and wiring, you might get the money and RIB to meet if you stretch one and shrink the other a touch...

Hey folks, first thing I'm gonna invest in is a decent laptop and some web browsing skills...Willk just visiting initial post from 2013....better late than never as Kerny says...yeah, just a lowly ab-initio water rat ...Lough Foyle and beyond, best underexploited stretch of water by a country mile inho. Short hops along the Coast mainly, too many cancelled Islay trips send me looking for own vessel eventually.

Yeah - good launch for the Isles - I've popped over to Islay/rathlin a few times from Greencastle. The Antrim coast is a good day trip too...

Know that patch of water very well!
Again as has been said.... think you may struggle on that budget - but needs must as they say
Give Dominic at North Atlantic Rib Marine a ring in Derry - he had on brokerage a Ribcraft 6.5 with a 150 Johnson on the back - that has been for sale for quite a while maybe a deal could be done. He will also know if any bargains going in/around your locality.
Every now and then a decent boat turns up on Done Deal but am sure you watching there anyways.

Lads,
You know the area pretty well then...yep it's ideal for island forays or coast hugging. JumpingJack, yessir looked at that Ribcraft online a couple of months back...not in the flesh yet and still for sale I think...only a couple of possible trials arranged for June so far. Time is another scarce commodity....all these great philosophical abstracts: time, money, boating...dream territory or what? Will let yis know how they go in v. basic overview from the tyro's viewpoint, if the forum is interested in such stuff.
Catch up with yis later

Mr Chowder,
Well, I always expect more from the sellers market than it can bear!
Been working the web for quite a while now and you certainly pick up few dead-giveaways in adverts like the one you mentioned...plenty others cited on the forums here too which is great...multiple selling of same item (+ multiple personalities of sellers), continual postponement of viewing times/dates, certain payment types, poor phrasing/grammarerererr and location. I'd personally run a mile from anyone selling trailered/stilted craft in a landlocked area but can run pretty fast for my size! HenryFreston's sent a good example of a vessel that would tickle my scantlings...dunno about that particular engine HP for it...I wonder what kind of safe load can you comfortably push on your Humber 5m with the 85 before she lets you know?

Most I've had is 5 up. But that was inland waters (Lough Derg, N. Tipp) and was no great drama. I have safe seating for 4 as long as two are good friends and don't mind cuddling up. We are generally 3 tho.
The Attaque (now marketed as the Ocean Pro 5.3) is narrow by modern standards, and drags its tubes but is VERY confidence inspiring. Think my ideal boat would be a 6.3 with a 200 Suzi.

ClamC,
5, of similar or varying weights?
6.1m with 140+ would do the trick for me and mine...problem foreseeably becomes in-laws, (instability at the best of times on dry land! Pony up some dollars for the fuel at least or GTF, freeloaders). That will come as no surprise on this forum, i'll bet.
Best part is, they're encouraged to read up on the basics of safety/stability and all that good stuff....and don't bother. End of that small rant.
Anyway, would take a 6.5 m with 150+ after that...unsure which model(s), need to get trying out a range of the beasts. Looking like Humber with 145+ Suzuki can tick quite a few boxes, unsure about big distances in one fell swoop however, stop offs v. likely. Aaagh, so much yet so little to choose from on strict budgets. C'est lavvy.

Would definitely recommend Humber Destroyer 5.8, 6.0, 6.5 with 150

Gandan -no interest in sibs or inshore fishing.
Seaflyer,
Humber (Destroyer) seems to have the goods. Looking at an approx. '95 issue 6.5mtr in decent nick, old 60 HP Yamaha thrown in. Not enough horsies, granted.
Wonder what Ribnetters opinions are about 2T Yamaha's (60HP) reliability/lifespan given general maintenance or annual tlc? Reading mixed reports elsewhere online. Can the beasts be trusted ?

I don't know about 60hp Yamaha but Yams have a good reputation.
What I do know is the Humber Destroyer is a fantastic boat with a 150 ficht on the back! I have never had any concerns with the boat and always felt safe and I have had it for about fourteen years now, why fix something that is not broken. A friend got a 6.3 Humber Ocean pro with a 200 Evinrude ficht on the back. Nice boat!

Seaflyer, just made it back aboard...submerged for a few days there.
Have no argument against price on some of these second or third hand Humbers, quite keen -some of them. Yamaha engines I have no experience with.
Yamaha guitars Oui, engines Non.
I'll shift Q. to another thread somewhere if not answered a dozens times already.
Righto
