RIB trip from Majorca to Spain?

Hi.

I've just bought my first RIB, a Zar 57 Welldeck. I have chartered them before and have a RYA powerboat licence. We were thinking of collecting the RIB in Majorca and sailing (what do RIBs do?) to Spain and then putting it on a trailer to Lagos in Portugal. My companion is a very experienced sailor. Am I mad?

No for sure not mad enjoy the cruise but stay away from Gibraltar waters or they will confiscate your rib.

On second thoughts you may get away with a 5.7 mtr and 150HP engine

I guess with the RIB on the trailer he will not even come close to Gibraltar .. and even if - then the 150hp will not help much to escape

That's a coincidence Will. Are you towing from the UK? Where are you keeping the RIB in Lagos? Do you know Lagos?

Andre, why would "they" confiscate your RIB? Tax matters?

I did consider cruising all the way to Lagos but I'm sure the fuel bill would be very high.

I've only ever put in about £60 in a day so I don't know how much fuel I'd burn on an 800 mile trip. Anyone know the fuel consumption for a Suzuki DF150TL 4T Petrol engine?

If you are caught in Gibraltar waters with a 6 mtr + rib or a powerboat with more then 200HP the local Police have the right to confiscate these and one has not a chance of any appeal.
Visitors have to apply in advance and permission may be granted.
This is because of the drug running operators.

when this law was implemented some few years ago all powerboats boats and ribs in the marinas were confiscated and never returned to their owners.

I believe you will be towing so this does not apply to you and also your rib is 5.7 and has a 150 HP so I should not have brought this up but at least now you know.

I know of this "from the horse's mouth"

Hi. Well we made it! Palma de Majorca for breakfast, Ibiza for lunch and Spain mainland for dinner. The sea was flat calm. No problems. Great buzz!

Hi, Sorry for the delay in replying I lost my Dad last month so haven't really been paying attention to stuff.

Yes I am indeed towing from the UK, next month.

We have a place in Lagos so I will be leaving it there.

I have been to Lagos about 25 times so know it fairly well

Sorry about your Dad.

We are in the marina in A29. Have you arranged with the Marina to leave it there or are you going to put in and out via the fisherman's slipway behind Sopromar?

I'm back in Lagos the 20th for a few days.

Cheers - Oh right, no not yet decided what the plan is yet.

What is the score on launching on the fishermans slipway?

I am a member at the sailing club near the fort and can launch here also.

We are not 100% sure what we will do either. The marina's price trebles from mid June for the summer for 3 months. afaik there's no problem with the slipway. I have heard that you can pay €25 per year and have access. I must have a look at joining the sailing club. have you a link to it? What type of RIB do you have?

If i do leave it in the water it will only be for weeks at a time when I am down there.

The RIB I am taking down is a Zodiac Medline 1.

As for the sailing club my Mum has all the paperwork, its cheap as chips to join from what I recall!

OK. Post here again when you arrive and we might try and meet up. No doubt you know the South Bar? There's very few RIBs in the marina. Maybe half a dozen.

I sure do know where the South Bar is!

Yes indeed, we had a share in a RIB last year but due to the others not really giving a F*** the boat got damaged and we couldnt use it

Hence bringing our own one!

Will PM you when I am down.
