Scallop diver

Hi all from West Scotland.
I am a Scallop diver looking to buy a small ( 3 to 4 meters ) SIB.
I am looking for the best one for bad weather.
Thinking about the yamaha 310 with the "deep V" or Seago in Hypalon.
Any other sugestions?
Regards.
Centauro.

SIB & bad weather don’t usually appear in the same sentence. My experience of scallop diving is off RIBs & you have to be very careful that the shells don’t cut the tubes when dragging bags of scallops in. Are you sure a SIB is best suited for your needs?

Yes, sorry for the confusion and thanks for your answer.
THe SIB is for my days off, wich allways are when bad weather doesnt let us go diving for scallops.I need a SIB because I live in a yatch, so I need something I can store in it and use when at anchor, like a dingy or tender?
However the main use would be to go out there for a ride and have some fun and go back home from the diving grounds when the fishing boat stays there, also for scouting for scallops doing apnea , but not for diving for scallops.

To be honest you need a heavy duty sib the cheap boats won’t last at all dived for years both professional and sport. have an area with protection for hauling in scallop bags rubber door mats work well to protect the tubes.

He’s not using it for scallop diving Jeff. It’s for his days off.

Ah sorry though scouting for scallops would he resist, we used a zodiac 310 solid at work throwing it in from riverbanks lasted years chuck a 8-10 hp on it and they fly not a lot of room for 4 as it’s rated but do able in good conditions it depends what you call bad weather they are hairy in 2 m seas.
I did 50 miles in a force 5-6 some years back hard work quicksilver 365 HD that’s the smallest I would go down too in that kind of weather.

Hi, I have limited time spent boating in a SIB, but can offer the following:

I personally would not want to be in a SIB less than 3.6m in "bad" weather. Been caught out twice in my SD360. Once on the Solant and once in a squal in Loch Hourn. A slightly bigger sib means bigger tubes and better stability.

I can't find a Yamaha 310 with a "deep V". I can find a Yamaha 310 with an inflatable sausage keel, but not a deep V

Why Hypalon? Do you intend to store it inflated on the deck of your yatch?

What outboard do you I tend to use?

You won’t find a deep V on a small sib Steve people have to understand the SIB we use has been born out of the tender range just some of us push them more you can get the Ali hull boats with a decent V but it’s up in the 4m range might not be what the OP wants unless he’s towing it behind the live aboard then skys the limit.

Hi.
Thanks for all your comments.
I will rather have a SIB for easy storage on board.
The seago 300 hypalon can take a 15 Hp engine.
And yes I plan to have it all year round inflated at the back of my yatch or on the fore deck.
bad weather for me is when I can not go diving because it is too bad weather for diving. Let's say 25+ knots depends where is blowing from.

Engine problably a Tohatsu 2 strokes 10 hp or 15 Hp if the boat can handle it.

I understand it is not an actual deep V keel at all. It is just a SIB with air floor and a bit more pronounced sausage keel. I like it the YAM310 air-V because the bow looks a bit more high than the rest of them and I think it may take into waves a bit better.

Blowing 25+ knot = 2m - 3m waves

I don't believe there are many Ribnet members that would want to be out on the water in a 3mtr sib in those conditions, I definitely wouldn't. However, anything bigger will be heavier and more difficult to get onto the deck of your yatch.

Take a look at the T38ie3 Honwave. Has the bow profile you like, high pressure "V" floor and is relatively "light" for a 3.8 mtr sib. It's not hypalon, but you can always cover it with a tarp when it's on your deck. But, saying that I still wouldn't want to be in it in those conditions.
