Unfortunately the forum can't upload videos. You have to use a video hosting site (I use YouTube) and post the link.

A great spot it was driving through the Kyle's & past the burnt isles on a family holiday trip 20 years ago that decided us to keep our cruiser on the west coast. We had trailered a 24ft cruiser up to largs & did crinnan & caledonia to Inverness & back. We were looking to base a biger boat somewhere & driving past the burnt isles made the decision for us. Kept a boat in largs for a few years then 15 years ago bought a house in west kilbride. We still love the Kyle's & everywhere around that area so much to explore. Even in a small boat you can travel big distances in safe sheltered water. Might bump into you at some point.

Welcome from me too. As said above a huge start for a boating interest to be based in your location.

Those older Avons are great boats. Do you feel the need for the prop guard or was it just on when you bought the outfit? They are very draggy and it would feel loads better without.

Lovely little boat a real classic. Small is sometimes good. If you do ever go bigger keep that little one as it certainly can go others places larger cant easily.

What lovely responses, thanks everyone.

The prop guard was already on it. Does it have so much affect on speed handling etc ?

Hopefully I'll bump ( gently) into some of you.

Yes it's a brilliant location I'm jealous of myself. We had to leave our old rental up at " Achnacloich " which many of you will know where it is up by Oban. Posh owner decided to start selling off estate houses. So we asked for housing association help. Neighbours ended up 6 miles down road in Taynuilt we got the nicer deal I think 80 miles south at Colintraive lol.

Used to do a lot of kayak fishing ocean kayak trident 15. This is much shorter but feels much nicer platform. Can't wait to take rods out.

Toby

It was on it already. Advise welcomed.

Usually you'd only find a prop guard on a boat used where you might expect folks to be fallen in the water such as a sailing club safety boat. But rarely seen on a leisure use boat.

They lose loads from responsiveness and top speed plus add to fuel consumption. I'm just going to pick a figure out of the air and say if your outfit was capable of 25kts it may be less than 20kts with the guard on.

Hopefully others with direct experience will be along and offer more insight.

Last boat I had was a 17 foot old fishing boat with cuddy with a mariner 40 on back. Iirc. That was 15 years ago. This felt quite nippy but actual gps speed was a bit crap tbh. Mrs and I up front and I think we maxed out at 19mph once. I've no experience of fast boats to compare to. Mind this was in choppy and a bit lumpy sea.

Cracking wee boat, I really like that setup. But 100% ditch the prop guard, does no good and as mentioned will slow you down and cost you a lot in fuel

You may recognise the harbour in the other photo.

I'll ditch the guard

A cracking bit of the country, especially from a boating point of view.

Nice little boat for exploring around the plentiful and beautiful coastlines you have in the area.

I’ld suspect that setup won’t half shift once you get out when it’s not so rough.

Looks an idyllic day. Wonder if the prop guard is off yet?
