The lads old boat had one and basically a Yamaha top half with a mercury lower.

He always said was good if very light boat as had very little torque (I cannot repeat his actual comments on a forum!). The engine seemed quiet enough and good on fuel though and gave him no issues.

Mercury at some point changed away from the Yamaha powerhead and increased the CC but i do not know exactly when.

The new mercury is a mercury, the vintage you are looking at is chalk and cheese really. Completely different engine.

Was talking to son about this today.

He said if it is a light boat and lightly loaded it will be okay but you will may not like leaving the etec as the lack of torque is noticable. He did not have any issues in the couple hundred hours he put on it. He never had it long enough really to comment on longevity.

I have a 5.8 Destroyer and I'm looking to swap the 2008 90 ETEC to a fours stroke that I can get serviced on the West coast of Scotland near Mull.
Any advice is welcome as the 2005 mercury 115 seems to be low on torque as there is usually 5 of us and the dogs on our boat.
Cheers
Nigel
