2011 Yamaha 4 outboard trim indication issue

Hi, I have recently installed a 2011 YAMAHA 4 stroke 60 Hp outboard. The trim works fine but the indication on the tacho does not change from being fully up when moved. Does anyone have any ideas what fault this could be (thinking some kinder of sender issue) This motor does not seem to have an external position sender.

Thanks

The trim segments I think only measure the trim (ie when the motor is on the 2 'Plungers' at the bottom of the total travel. It does not measure tilt as I understand it.

I have just installed a version of that Yamaha Tach in my new Rib

Use a volt ohm meter to test at the back of the gauge to see if the readings change as the outboard is raised and lowered. You may even be able to find the switch and work it manually.

On the tilt tube there should be a paddle that trips a sender unit with a pink and black wire. If that sender or paddle is not there it obviously won’t work. If that sender and paddle are there find 2 white plugs on a single pink wire wrapped up in yellow tape in engine tray. Peel the tape , Pull the caps and connect the pink wires. These are not connected at factory.

Thanks Davie, I believe that I have located the part you are referring to - I have attached a picture, please can you confirm for me please. I believe that the original part number was 69J836721100 with the superseding parts number being 69J836721200.

Thanks Marc

That is the correct part for registering the trim. Now use an ohm meter to read it as you push it up and down. This can be done at the gauge or the closest connector. If it reads and changes as you move the part then it is either a connection issue somewhere or the gauge is faulty.

Yes that’s the part but it looks like it’s stuck in the fully down position. Can you move that arm? It should spring back anti-clockwise..

Good catch! That would explain being fully up all the time. Might be able to simply free it up, and lubricate it. Or disassemble, clean, then lube it.

"Anti-clockwise" is understandable to an American, but I had never actually seen it used for "clockwise" Then again I am still trying to figure out how the term "in anger" is used...
