2018 Great River Race - 8 Sept - Volunteers wanted

As we approach September the Team at Northern Exposure Rescue start thinking about the Great River Race on the Thames in London.

This year it’s being held on Saturday the 8th of September and we need more safety boats than ever before. As if to make the job of escorting 2500 people through central London in 360 rowing boats wasn’t hard enough, Tideway have decided to dig a huge tunnel under the River and littered the banks with barges, boats and jack ups. All of these will need to be negotiated carefully and safely.

To help with that we need at least 35 safety boats and around 70 volunteers to man them along the 22 mile route from London Docklands to Ham House in Richmond Upon Thames. Make no mistake this is one of the biggest boating events in the country and we are looking for more volunteers to make this happen.

If you can help us we’d love to hear from you and you can register via the Eventbrite website. The link is here -

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/volunteer-safety-boat-for-the-2018-great-river-race-tickets-46685674108?aff=ebdssbdestsearch

In return the organisers of the Great River Race we cover your;

- fuel expenses of your car getting your boat to and from the event

- boat fuel whilst at the event,

- provide camping free of charge the night before and after the race,

- mid river moorings for Friday and Saturday night in Petersham

- bacon rolls on the Saturday morning and

- an invite to the end of race party on Saturday night.

We can also help you out with launching, car parking and cost effective local hotels if camping isn't your thing!

It is an early start with the safety briefing at Masthouse Terrace Pier at around 0800hrs but that also makes it an early finish!

As ever there are some criteria so we are looking for boats that are 4m+ and we want skippers with a RYA Safety Boat ticket or a Level 2 and some previous experience.

So please do consider taking part in this year’s Great River Race, London’s other Marathon!

We look forward to hearing from you.

Chris

Can't be there ourselves this year. This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to get onto the Thames who hasn't done so before. All organised, no hassle with paperwork AND expenses paid. It's a long tiring day & you need the patience of a saint, but it's a great experience.
