4.2m buying advice

Hi, been following Ribnet for sometime. I have a 2.7m Honwave with 8hp at the moment and looking to upgrade to a RIB for next summer. I'm looking at Grand Silverline, Brig Falcon & Zodiac Open - all 4.2m with ~50hp. The main usage would be Salcombe Estuary & Poole/Studland, 4 adults, beach hopping & bit of fishing - all in good weather! Any view on these models? I'm leaning towards the Zodiac at the moment as it has appears to have a deeper hull but it's very difficult to find any reviews or feedback on these boats. Any assistance or feedback appreciated! Cheers, Darren.

Welcome to the forum.

I used to have a Zodiac Pro 420. They keep changing the name. Good boats, but be aware they are a shallow or mid v hull, so it will slap when the wind gets up. The 420 Open looks to be very similar, double check the data sheets to confirm but importantly you can opt for neoprene hypalon tubes and the new open range comes with at least 4 seats which is impressive given the boat size.

Positives for me were: easy to trailer and fits in a domestic garage. Just check for clearance if you opt for an A-frame or light-pole. Slide on tube collar for cleaning or indeed repairs. Good range of accessories, albeit expensive, contemporary styling and range of colours.

Negatives, and there were very few, and I'm going back to a 2006 model, were gelcoat hairline cracks on the console, small drainage holes in the bilge (no elephant trunk), bench seating was basic and fine but only for calm seas.

I used to run with Yamaha 40V 2-stroke after a near crusade-like experience hunting for the 50hp version. I think these boats although rated for 50hp, and it definately needs it with 4-up, just watch the weight as they are still light-weight boats.

Welcome +1.
We used to have a Mercury Ocean Runner 420 and used it regularly in the places you mention. 40hp gave a sometimes chine walkingly scary 30 knots when solo and it had plenty of grunt with four. I can't see 50hp is needed with this size but anyways..

I followed our campsite neighbour up the estuary, he'd just purchased a new Brig the same size as ours with 40 Merc. It had a bench seat and I was struck how low it was at the stern, sub-planing speed, just him and his missus on his first trip out. Didn't seem a well balanced boat. Ours was set up perfectly, console well forward and central jockey seat, no bench. I think this is more important than the depth of V, the Ocean Runner had a shallow V but it coped ok with the Solent chop, always felt safe in big seas or crossing deep wakes. Power to weight made it almost like a big jet ski. Jet skis are well balanced and have a shallow V .

Our latest 4.7m boat (Ranieri) has a big forward deck area and more rear weight similar to the Brig. Looks great for style and social function, but ultimately handicapped for handling and performance because of limited size and the layout. Design compromise wouldn't be an issue with a longer model except you then need a bigger engine and costs go up.

Gemini GRX420 or Ceasar Surfcat will outclass all of the boats mentioned above in poor weather.

Maybe and nice cats but always tiller steer. You'd have to buy and fit your own helm. Not everyone willing to do this.

Ah, didn't realise a console was required.
