40hp on an Osprey Viper???

I've just bought a Viper 5.2 without an engine and I have an almost new Suzuki DF40. Would it be ridiculous to use it on the Viper? I only use the boat for fishing so no towing or taking 5 burley divers and I'm not interested in going at warp factor 6!! Cruising at around 20 kn is fine. What do you think people?

Put it on and take it for a test drive. Wouldn't be enough power for me that is for sure. I would think a 90hp would be about right.

It won't set the heather alight, but it will shift it. If it's a nearly new Suzuki DF it might be worth selling it on and getting something with more power rated for the hull. That's not to say you go at warp speed, but it's always there when you need it, which is useful when the weather turns.

I recently put a brand new Suzuki DF40A on a Ribtec 455 for our sailing club, and it easily gets up to 28kn (which is far more than we need given the 12kn speed restriction in the Thames!). If you already have the engine and can easily rig it up, maybe worth a try - you might get 20kn. The Suzuki DF40 is the same block as the DF50/60 as well, and some places will chip them up to 60hp for you - depending on how much you bought it for could be worth considering.

Thank you guys. The re chip is interesting. Apparently there's a plate on the inlet manifold called a silencer holder which you change for one with a bigger hole. Would screw the warranty but only 15 mins to fit. Worth a thought.
