A Frame mods.

Folks got a A frame from a member here and a great job it is in great condition. Now I need to mod it to fit perfect in a SR4. I plan to cut the tubes at the base of the vertical and have welded in a stepped piece each side to reduce the width at the base of the frame, picking up on the transom struts and positioning the A frame mounting plates against the transom and bolting through the struts and mounting plate. Do you see any problems in mounting here? Would there be any strength issues in welding in a stepped section ? What do i need clearance between the tube and the A frame to prevent ware ?
