From 1957 to 2003 management of the island was delegated to Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and was managed under a partnership agreement between the NTS, SNH and the MoD. This changed in September 2003 when the Trust was granted ‘Approved Status’ by SNH to manage the National Nature Reserve directly.
The partnership approach to managing the islands continues, and has been expanded to include Historic Scotland, QinetiQ (agents for MoD) and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar – the Western Isles Council. Representatives of all the partnership organisations meet regularly to make both strategic and operational decisions about the management of St. Kilda. The Trust also appoints a seasonal ranger and an archaeologist, with financial assistance from SNH and Historic Scotland respectively.
Under the enabling legislation, the Trust ensures there are opportunities for access to and enjoyment of its properties by the public where possible. Given the difficulty in getting to St Kilda, the Trust provides opportunities for access through its work party programme. Other visitors to the islands arriving by their own means are welcome, although numbers must be monitored because of the sensitivity of the natural and cultural heritage of the islands, and management carried out where necessary to ensure impacts on the heritage of the islands are minimised. The Trust is also working to provide opportunities for greater understanding and appreciation of St Kilda, not only for those who reach the islands, but also for the wider population who may not be able to visit.

Just a few pictures for you to drool over whilst planning your trip.
We just turned up without giving advance warning, but made a point of finding the warden as soon as we had landed. She was very helpful and happy to see us, but then, who wouldn't be!!
There are more buildings than I had exepcted. In addition to the defence contractors' accommodation and power station there is a pub (The Puff Inn), a shop (I still have the Soay mouse mat on my desk) and other bits and pieces.
We were warned about surge along the pier making mooring difficult but we had no problem.

Lat time I was there the pub was shut to visitors as it had lost its licence and the nice lady warden wouldnt let us in for a sly pint even after we brought her out to our ship for a look about.
Would love to go out there in the rib at some point but shame the Pac has a crap tank range (hopefully being fixed soon with the installation of a bladder tank under the foredeck)

An up date on our plan; we (4 ribs) intend launching from uig on the 17th June,the fairly flexible plan is to do a bit of exploring around the area during this day,tent it near leverburgh and set of weather permitting on the Friday morning for the run out to the islands. If others want to tag along great...however this is not an organised trip and if anyone is likely to sink it's going to be me...so self reliance is suggested.
Scottish diver....there has been talk about your heated cabin looking attractive.. if it get cold...

just an up date for anyone looking for company. We will be leaving uig on the ferry up to tarbet cars/boats on thursday (17th June) morning,the plan is to tent it at leverburgh. Check on the conditions Friday morning and if favourable St Kilda..then back in the same day. anybody tagging along welcome....

If you are tenting it near Leverburgh, there is a nice sheltered bay at Rodel with a couple of moorings. There is a hotel there and they let us camp at the rear of the hotel the last time we returned from St Kilda. The hotel was good for food etc too.
On another point, earlier in the thread it was mentioned that you cannot pass through the causeways linking the western isles, however you can get through between Eriskay and South Uist.
Good luck for the trip, weather looks not too shabby this week!

We're heading up to Plockton on Friday for the weekend. No plans to go to St Kilda again - no firm plans at all really, but intend exploring the Outer Hebrides so will keep an eye out for you!

We went out to St Kilda on friday....it was well worth the run out,..impressive is an understatement when it appeared out the mist. heavy weather going and coming back,this lead to the one concern I would mention from a safety point of view;fuel back up.
My DF150 typically averages about 0.8 ltrs per NM,the islands from Leverbourgh were 49.9 miles (not NM) so 100 ltrs excluding a back up should have been fine...I took 200 ltrs, overkill I thought however.... I used 220 ltrs . the weather was that bad, keeping the boat on the plane was near on impossible so spent most of the trip getting out of the hole. which in turn humped through the fuel.....
Well worth it though.
