Advice of new purchase

Hi everyone,
I’m a newbie to be boating,I don’t know why as I’ve lived by the sea for years.I’m after a bit of advice please,I’m after a sib with alu floor and there is one at boat world for a reasonable price for 4.2m,has anyone had dealings with their boats? The next question is outboards……… 😂.anyone had any dealings with outboard motors shop uk? They pop up on market place, can’t work out if they are legit 🤔.what are cheaper engines like? Eg parsons, orca? I won’t be going hardcore in it,just hugging the coast and fishing but don’t want it breaking down.thank you in advance for any advice 😀

Hi Steve and welcome. You live in a great part of the world for boating.

My personal experience of Boatworld are they’re fair and helpful with some great value SIBs. Which one attracted you?

Re Outboard World. If they are an outfit with no legit registered uk address and all contact through a web form steer well clear.

Why not Boatworld for an outboard too?

David

Hi Steve, welcome to Ribnet.

Can't help you with Boatworld apart from I've never hear or read anything bad about them.

Ive looked for info on "Outboard Motors UK" and can't find out anything about them, they could be completely legit, but I'd expect to at least see something about them on the Internet. As David has already said, I would steer well clear.

I know you've said you want to do a bit of fishing ect, is that on your own with others. Will you be inflating /deflating every time or trailering it. The only reason I ask, is a 4.2 mtr ali floor Sib is a pretty big lump to haul around on your own.

As for cheaper outboards, they undoubtedly do a job, but when I was in the same position as you I asked myself would I have bought a Skoda or a Lada back in the 70's, they did a job........ but?

Thank you

Thank you for your replies, there will always be at least 2 adults so im not worried about the weight,I think with regards to the engine I will spend the money and get something decent,im going to look at a used 20hp Honda tomorrow that is really local to me and they do repairs and servicing as well.

I know the 4.2 sib you are talking about and 2 Adults will struggle to move that about. Have a look at the Honwave boats

I think this is the one you are looking at

A common theme that runs through all newbie questions and answers is one of size and weight.

Newbies always what as big as they think they can manage, and at one time that would have included myself. I wanted a 3.9 Volaire,. Then when I saw it, stood next to it, with Diane's help tried to lift it into the back of the truck, reality kicked in and I knew it was too big for our needs and how we would use it.

My advice would be to see a 4.2 ali sib in the flesh, not on the water, on dry land and stand next to it. It is big, very big. Next try and lift the deflated sib into the back of you car/truck, then imagine lifting it after a day out on the water and its heavier because its wet and your tired. Now imagine your beloved being totally pissed off with you, when she is wet, cold, broken a nail, bent a finger etc. If all that sounds manageable, then that 4.2 from Boatworld looks a good SIB.

Or you could buy a Honwave T38IE 3 which is an excellent SIB and only weighs 46KG which 2 people can lift quite easily

Whist I'd agree if the OP's wants and needs are covered by a T38 it would be a good choice. But what if he needs a flat deck, it wouldn't suit then.

Hell Lee1 was last seen doing 30kts powered by a 7.5hp 50yr old Mercury on one of the UK most ecologically sensitive rivers... the greens will have him in clink by now.

There is absolutely no problem fishing from a SIB with an Airdeck and it's lighter. I understand why some would prefer an ali deck, there are pro's and cons to both.

6 adults in a SIB is very questionable no matter if its 4 or a 4.2 metre. I would suggest 4 adults would be the very limit to do it with any semblance of comfort. A 20hp may also struggle to get on the plane and stay there.
6 adults will be very tight and uncomfortable and you will not get on the plane and will be traveling at displacement speed.

But at least he will have a very reliable kill cord

6 adults in any SIB (even a 5.4m RIB) is not going to be much fun.
