Indeed I would concur that an Ospey Vipermax would be a good choice for someone looking for a leisure Rib.
A word of caution however. They do have a reputation as a "kit rib", where owners often complete the fit out at home, rather than factory completed. In many cases this can result in a product as good or sometimes even better than a boat entirely built in the factory.
Unfortunately, because not all homebuilders are as skilled or fastidious as others, the used Osprey Vipemax's on the market do not have a consistent quality, which results in these RIB's not holding their value as well as others.
This of course could mean you can find a bargain if you are not too worried about it holding it's resale value. I have heard they can be difficult to sell.
A safer bet would be to go for a Ribeye, where superb quality can always be assured.
Good luck

Aye, aye, fair 'nuff, I have a wee wan on the go and I'm burning beech tonight, so sparky but hot (which is kinda appropriate as Egypt burns...)
... but I detest that yoke, whatever it is

Well like some one said at the beginning everyone will recomend what they have !
So on that note and as it hasn't been mentioned you have got to have alook at Ribcraft.I have had a 5.45 and now a 7.8. I live near Hythe (Southampton) so at least feal well qualified to say they have both managed the solent chop and bigger propper seas round the back of the Island VERY well. I have found them to be excellent boats , unbeaable build quality and they holf their value very well ! Great boats !. But get along to Ribex in Cowes and get out on as many boats as you can

well you should make more of an effort it's quite easily done and always gets a result. Hi Tim happy new year.
I notice someone recommended a Cobra and a Ribeye on one post here. I don't think much of Ribeyes at all but I'd buy one before a Cobra anyday Pop the indspection plate and have a feal to see how solid the underside of the Deck is!. Both Beutiful looking Boats howevers
Don't ovelok the Tolent I mean Sohatsus no I mean Solents or Tohatsus the hulls are the same design and made very well, good tubes by Henshawa all good stuff. One of your countrymen is an agent I believe.
Hugh Jardons Osprey is a cracker, painstakingly put together and a excellent quality components, I don't like copper wiring I prefer it to be tinned but very few people d that. The quality of Lamination in an Osprey is as good as it comes IMNSHO
ersers
A Scorpon 6.5 is a beautiful boat if you can get one

Rib Purchase
Lee
You are in the same situation as I was last year, I sold my Doral Sports Boat to buy / PX against a Rib. My advice would be to get at least a 7mtr, thats not for flash reasons
but purely for comfort, no doubt you are aware how choppy the solent can be, with 7mtrs
and upwards you will get a comfortable rib and ride, go for a 200hp engine as a min if poss
if you can buy at the higher end, Cobra in my opinion is great and versatile but expensive, Ballistic's and Ribeye's also good, but again think about the length !!!
Think about the RV in a couple of years, think about colour, storage, space, what extra's are fitted... Make a good offer, you will be suprised what will be accepted....
I purchased a Piranha 7mtr, which has a massive beam, and is very stable, fast and comfortable.
If you havn't found one by March, your welcome to come out in ours, we get over to Cowes most weekends..
Good luck with the hunt, you will love it once you buy one.
Patrick

Timw, since everyone else is just laughing at you I thought I'd question what you said just in case any newcomers actually get sucked in by your rhetoric!

I'm not sure they have a "kit rib" reputation, outside your household! But certainly they do offer the option to buy part finished boats, as do some other brands - both small and high volume rib producers.

that is true, and why most people who lack the skill, time or attention to detail would pay the factory to provide a finished boat. By and large most of the home finished boats are done by people who have good technical skills and the time and inclination to do it well. Obviously there will be cases where it has been done simply to save money, and some corners may have been cut - but even with a factory finished boat modifications or additions may well have been bodged. If in doubt get a survey. If in need of factory quality (whatever that may be!) buy a new boat from a factory.

can you back that up with an real evidence. From what I've seen, in my hovering around the 2nd hand rib market Vipermax's generally hold there value well (some might suggest unrealistically so!) and don't seem to be on the market for month after month.

This of course could mean you can find a bargain if you are not too worried about it holding it's resale value. I have heard they can be difficult to sell.
|
again can you back that up, are you able to point to a well finished Osprey VM, correctly priced which sold slower than you'd expect (bearing in mind that in the current economy all high value assets are likely to be moving slower).

A safer bet would be to go for a Ribeye, where superb quality can always be assured.

So no ribeye has ever had a fault? I'm sure I can find you some threads on here highlighting pin holes in gel coat, and did the console not fall off one in wales - because actually ribeye's aren't ALL finished to some brilliantly controlled standard in some super fastidious factory - some of them are finished by dealers around the country who may not have been correctly trained or may not have followed their instructions...

To throw the proverbial cat amongst the pigeons: seeing that the Ribeye S class hull does in fact originate from an Osprey design I think there may be only one of three conclusions drawn from this.
A) Ribeyes are a splash and hence forth we should just have a slagging match with timw à la Leeway.
or
B) They are an evolution of the Osprey and are as such better than them.
or
C) Mass produced boats can never attain the same consistent quality as boats all built by one man and his dad.
And besides, Ribeyes haven't been true British sports RIBS since yamaha stopped the VMAX series. 'Cos they've all got bloody four strokes now

Don't worry about Polly, he's just as dangerous when armed with only a logical debating position
