Advice please

Hello all, I've currently got a valiant v400. The pvc tubes are getting a bit tired but it's a fairly useful boat even in a bit of chop.

Today i had the opportunity to buy an Avon Adventurer 4.01mtr 1998 with a very clean well serviced yamaha 40hp 2 stroke all on a Bramber roller trailer. So i bought it.

Now I've got it home and I've looked at it next to my valiant i have concerns if it'll be as good as the Valiant in coastal water due to the hull design. Mainly the Moray Firth where i go mostly.

Has anyone any experience of the Avon ?

No experience of an Avon Adventure, but I used to have a Yamaha 40hp 40v from 1995 that spent its life on a Princess motor yacht. Beautiful engine. Very reliable and robust.

You are where you are with the current Rib. It’s probably on a par with a Zodiac Pro 7-man in terms of hull design, so expect it to slap in short chop.

Enjoy the summer. I used to go out in all sorts of stuff from Rosehearty through to Portsoy. If you go out yourself, then get some weight up on the bow, anchor, sandbags, whatever, that will help.

The Moray Firth is fairly unforgiving. Weather is unpredictable, that’s a given, but then you have currents and of course wind. If you want something with a deep hull, then you’re looking at an Avon 4m if size is critical for storage or indeed tow weight.

👍👍

I've done hundreds of nautical miles on the Moray Firth in the valiant 4m. I've experienced the good and the bad it's had to offer and tbh the Valiant has coped ok. I might put the 40hp on the valiant and sell the Avon if its not going to be of use in the normal conditions on the firth.

What would you recommend for rough water ?

I’m not on commission, but Ribcraft 4.8m. You pay your money and you make your choice. Ribquest 4.8m if you can find one, or Searider 4.7m.

A few years ago, but you get the idea. Brother was faced the wrong way on the jockey like the rear gunner on a Lancaster filming. No apologies for language.

Which adventure is it? You can get a 4m searider badged as an adventure which is a great boat but the normal adventure is pretty flat bottomed & isnt a great boat. The 40v Yamaha is a peach though. This boat was badged as a 4.0 adventure but clearly its a searider Click image for larger version

Well, maiden voyage complete. Beautifully smooth water, blistering sunshine. The rib handled lovely. Even managed 35mph lol
