Anchor Chain, in or around Pompey

All

Anyone suggest the best (Cheapest) place to get galvanised anchor chain around Pompey.

My plough type anchor dragged a couple of times this year.

Hardly surprising really as its only on the end of 2M of chain!!

I want to add at least another 4M to it.

Not sure I would go for B&Q chain, it's more for keeping ramblers out of your garden.

I would nip down to Chez Jackeen and visit Mairine Superstore. The should be fairly competitive, pricewise.

This is true. Not only has my boat stayed where I anchored it but I have had no ramblers in the garden either!

Peter

Good news about the ramblers.
I only remember seeing light long link chain in B&Q, which woud not even secure a Jack Russel.
Must look harder next time.

How does it stop ramblers? Do you swing it at them, havent got a major problem with them just a few kids sitting on my wall. Will it work with the oiks?

Nasher, there is a place near Fareham Creek that seems to do cheap deals in that sort of thing. I can't remember the name at present though, but it is part of Hardway Marine. Just follow the road that goes to Fairweathers and it's next to a motorbike garage in an industrial unit.

Nasher, have a word with Aging Youth - I'm sure he could spare you 4m from the wheelbarrow load of chain that he has on Southcoast II

Yes. Works especially well if you leave a 5kg Danforth anchor on the end before you swing it

more chain

Nasher

I have always found that more chain is better.Especially when you remember that the day you really have to anchor is the day you want the anchor to work. This is even more true if your wife and children are on board and the weather conditions are not the best.

May I suggest 12m of chain?

What link diameter and chain length would you folks use on a 5.8m RIB? Bearing in mind its a bit breezy here mean wind speed 15kt I think.

I guess if you have a heavier (thicker) chain it can be a shorter length, is that a reasonable assumption?

Mine is what came with the boat and I've never used it but always at the back of my mind that if I do need to it'll probably be in a needs-new-underwear situation.... not the time to find out it ain't enough!

Boat jumbles are the place for chain! There used to be a guy from Brum who lived next door to the factory who used to do the rounds and sell at a good price.
