Anglesey County Council to impose slipway charges
Following a pilot sceme at Treaddur Bay and Treath Buchan last summer. Anglesey council has decided to impose a charge of £10 to launch and recover any motor boat, on all its slipways as from May this year (2004). In addition to this as from 2005 the council will only allow craft to use its slipways that have been registered with the councils Maritime department.
These measures are intended to control, monitor and if necessary prevent undesirables from launching craft.
Yearly permits will be available for £100 for non residents or £60 for residents.

They will catch the wrong ones!
I assume they will want to see insurance before issuing permits. Will every slip be manned all daylight hours throughout the summer?

Oh well, I'll have to find a girlfriend nearer to home then, although I suppose I could save 40 quid by using her address - bad luck, Gaynor, looks like you're stuck with me

So, why do they need to charge.
They lie. They're small minded opportunists who see a way of making money. Full stop.

What is an "undesireable?"
Who and what makes you one? This is where having a 4x4 is handy, just launch on the beach and thumb your nose at them.
Locally there are free slips and slips that charge, generally the charge is to put people off using them rather than to make money.

Slipway Fee's
Hi Guy's
In my view there are several things to consider about the practalcalities of impossing fee's.
The local harbour master or (representative) is the only person who can collect these fee's from the public under local by-law's. They must be inplace first.
Enforcement is another issue, can only be put into effect by the local constabluary. In addition to protect HM Rep from attack!!!
All beaches are common land and belong to you, check all public rights of way for access.
Portsmouth City Council tried this last summer at Eastney to deter the abuse by some jet skier's and boat owners; there was a riot!!!
All the local fishermen were up in arms, as we all pay harbour fee's to use langstone harbour. All the boys who come down from London nearly strung the poor lad up.
No sooner had the fee's been imposed the council backed down because it cost too much to collect the fees. Policing, cash collecting/security ect. The volume of fee's being collected did not cover the outgoings.
Hope this helps you guy's, if you all get together you can take on the Big Boy's and sometimes win!!!
Good luck.

I know that this is a touchy subject, but why shouldn't a council charge for use of a council owned slipway?

Quote from Mr Mike Mothersole (Anglesey Council Maritime Officer)
"These charges will help the Council to police the slipways, beaches and sea. Making it safer for both beach and boat users. The monies raised from these charges will put people on to the slipways, who can then police the area and enforce Council Bylaws.
Registration allows us to to know who is in the water and also ensure that the people using the slipways are competent Sailors". Said Mr Mothersole. (Anglesey Mail 10th March 2004).

Well if what Aging Youth said is correct in that the foreshore belongs to the public, that means they've been building on my property without my permission.
And where is JK gonna take cover? Even if he hid in Canary Wharf his head would stick out of the top.

If this goes ahead I suspect Mr "Mothersole" will be in for some ribald comments.

Just a thought with a bit of devils advocate:
Beaches are as said previously are common land, I'm NOT total sure on this but bow to better knowledge.
Are the owners of (public) slipways not allowed to charge for the use of them to cover the creation and maintaince costs?
Be they crown estate, local councils (Which I thought was owned by the people),
An unmaintained slip soon becomes interesting verging on dangerous after a while.
You could argue that the local taxes cover this, but you could also argue that the users should pay.
This leads into the how do you inforce it, launching tickets? car park charges?
Whats the view of the forum
edited added NOT - twit read posts twice

Who ownes the shore?
I was always led to believe that the shoreline between High and low water mark was "Crown" Property. Any land above the high water mark is owned by the land adjacent to it.
Any legal eagles out there?
