another southern newbie

Hi
just bought my first rib in October. Currently stored for the winter in North Cornwall but will be bringing her home in Spring for use in the Solent. Going to LBS this weekend to look for kit/toys & need to book some courses (RYA level 2, VHF radio). If you see us struggling to launch or looking lost (grey/white 5.5m Explorer Sport called "Proper Job" towed behind a red discovery) please say Hi
Anyone know of any contacts where I can store her for the summer months down on the coast?

Hi Pete, welcome. I got all excited when I read "Newbie" and "North Cornwall" another SW ribster would have bolstered our numbers by 25%! As it turns out you're another Solent Dogger, sorry ribber. "Proper Job" is a proper Cornish expression, it kinda means - Thank you. Have fun with her.

No, I just I cant afford to buy a house in my home county because all the first time buyer houses have been bought as holiday homes.

In the village that I grew up in, there are now 3 holiday cottages standing empty most of the year, these aren't nice big quaint cottages these are 2/3 bedroom houses that would suit in price and room a small family.

They have been bought as investment properties for people who live out of the county causing two problems:

(i) Inflated house prices on par with the South East, when the local wages are 1/10 of that in Surrey etc.

(ii) Lack of affordable housing due to 2nd home buyers

(iii) loss of income to local business's through the winter months

If you are going to own a house in the country side then live and work there and contribute to the local community.

Now I am going back to my Mortgage hunting where 170,000 is going to cost me 900GBP a month and I might be able to buy a cardboard box.

It's a major problem down here. Shaggy, Est and I are lucky enough to have a fairly substancial mortgage free house. We wanted a property with a bit of land for the kids, three times we were outbid buy out-of- county buyers. It's bloody sickening!! There is no end to the spending power of these people. The locals can't compete. A couple of years ago Falmouth had a 27% property price increase in a 12 month period.

Pop around to Polperro, knock on the door of the fisherman's cottages, don't expect to find a fisherman though. A garage there sold for £60,000 3 years ago.

thanks for the welcome!
didn't expect to start a roaring debate on incomers buying up all the property in the south west - for the record I don't own a holiday home coz like most people I couldn't afford one. I do go down to Cornwall several times each year & have bought the rib from a cornish firm so hopefully I'm putting something in not taking out.
Thanks for the info about Rogue Wave - I'll pm him to see if he can help

Pete

We were only joking Pete, it was a topical subject as Shaggy is in the process of buying. We're not quite there with our "Firestartin'" welsh cousins, yet.

Welcome Pete L. There's a great bunch of Ribnetters who face the mighty challenges of the Solent on a regular basis, sometimes for the sake of a pie and a pint !

We did our training with Dave Robson (Aquapower) in Yarmouth. Would certainly recommend his courses. He's usually at LBS, running the safety aspect of it all (on the outside in a hut on the pontoons or doing short patrols in the school boat) if you want a chat with him.

Also, every second Monday of the month Solenteers try to gather in The Churchillian pub (Portsdown Hill, Portsmouth). A few top new peeps came along last Monday and 'twould be nice for you to meet up with others and put faces to names / plan a trip or two and get some sound advice about boat storage.

Glad to hear it as the intention when the kids finish school in a few years is to sell up & move down to that part of the world. Perhaps I'll get honorary membership of the south west ribsters then.

many thanks

Pete the once a month Mondays at Church are well worth a trip. You will meet a fantastic bunch of people and get a lot help (from personal experance i did and still do). I have had to drop out for a bit but should be back with them in the summer. All you are going over are questions i had few years back so drop me a pm if you get stuck or have any questions. Good luck and enjoy.
