Anti Terrorist devices -boats-
Anyone see the BBC news this morning?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8200840.stm
They showed a searider (tell ya the truth I thought it was Nos in his 5.4) using a device to shoot across in front of the bow of a moving boat, which the boat then runs over and it snags the prop.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8200910.stm
Now collectively there's some brains on here, so get your thinking caps on lads. What devices can you come up with to stop/disable a moving boat?
The one they showed this morning wouldn't be much use against a Jetdrive. How about a remote control tesco carrier bag which homes in on the intake?
Ok fury muff, maybe not.

My observations -
- The number of fishing pots / marks out there will do this without the endless millions I'm sure has been wasted on this hi tech gizmo ( but they are still firing it form a trusty 30 year old searider design ! )
- How long before Mr marine plod gets it in his own prop ?
- I'm pretty sure you can put bolt on rope cutters on the leg .........

Can you get rop cutter for outboards? Obviously I've seen them on the end of prop shafts but thought there wasn't one for outboards?

i think the net is a good idea but i think it would be very easy to avoid. chances are any terrorists would get caught in it because they wouldn't have done their rya pb level two so cant do high speed turns properly!

That all depends if it's made in France or in Sweden.

Nah! Terrorists have guns. They use them. The searider wouldn't stand a chance of getting near enough to deploy the thing as shown. Be good for the maritime equivalent of Police Interceptors though - waterborne stinger.
I remember a long time ago, while moored on a buoy in a harbour (before marinas) a speedboat kept charging through the moorings every ten minutes or so. He took the same route each time, very close to several occupied boats. By mid afternoon we were all fed up. . An enterprising chap went for a row in his dinghy, for exercise . Next time the speedboat passed through its engine stopped with a bang. Seems it caught a floating rope in the prop. There was no one in the cockpits of any of the occupied boats. No one saw anything. I think he eventually drifted alongside a wall - but of course, I wasn't watching.

Would this not be a good idea for people like the RNLI, when they go after ribs that are unmanned, e.g person fell off and killcord not used

the rnli use a rocket propelled line thrower ,,speedline made by pains wessex fires a line 250 meters, anyhow a prop guard cage would possibly stop the line getting caught in the prop .

got to agree with you on that one ,,look like power rangers or those dodgy androids from the avengers ,and for me there is nothing more ignorant or arrogant than someone getting interviewed wearing shades or sunglasses ,regardless of how strong the sun is .
