Spoke to Crafinsure - normal policy for our little SIB/engine is:
£46 with £100 excess.
£52 with £50 excess.
To extend for seasonal tidal coverage then:
£84 with £100 excess (but £200 excess applies in event of tidal claim).
£90 with £50 excess (but £100 excess applies in event of tidal claim).
So not that cheap to extend and policy starts to look a bit pricey.

Max. Ditto here, just received their reply.
About a £30 uplift to add tidal cover for the rest of the main summer season until renewal. That is on top of the base policy which is about £80 as I insure for the price we paid for the boat and engine plus Garmin plotter, transom wheels and all the other kit that could go in the worse case. As with yours an extra £100 on excess if loss/damage when moored on tidal waters.
For the ease of seeing out this current policy and getting full cover for our holiday... where the outfit's moored situation will see it more at risk than at any time previously... then I'll just pay and stay with them.

Interesting - mine was £40 more for tidal? As you say not much choice though...

I phoned Porthcawl about this as my policy states "stored ashore when not in use".
I was told that if it was keeping it on a pontoon in a marina while I was was on holiday then it is "in use" and fully covered.

>>>mine was £40 more for tidal?
Who knows with insurance. Perhaps the fact I'm paying more initially alters it??
I've just paid for the upgrade to tidal and note this is the 14th policy in 10+yrs I've had with Craftinsure. No claims yet but in all my dealings they give confidence any claim would be met fairly.

That's the important bit. I calculated that the £10k pay out on my stolen Landy two years ago basically wiped out 30 years + of yearly premiums so...[struggles for a closing point ]...I guess it paid off in the end.

Ahh it was £40ish... I'd forgotten the standard £10 charge for policy alterations! Obviously if leaving on tidal waters is to be a possibility in the period following on from renewal it should be better value getting the correct policy from the start.

Doesnt the policy cover being moored in a marina when in use? IE on holiday. Mine is covered in a marina but we pay extra and a higher excess for being on a mooring. In insurance terms a mooring is very different to a marina
We are also covered if we leave the boat on a mooring to go ashore for the day

AFAIK - marina, mooring, jetty makes no odds:

But specifically it states under 'General Exclusions' in the Small Boat Policy:
We will not pay for:
*Loss or damage while "insert boat name here" is left afloat when unattended except on non-tidal waters*

That wording is different to mine, mine states something like " Insured whilst kept ashore or afloat in coastal marinas "
Which excludes moorings hence i had to add an endorsement to keep it on the mooring we own

But ours is for the small boat policy - ie little dinghies, SIBs etc.

I think the Craftinsure SIB/smallcraft insurance is a stripped down budget policy which at low boat values is virtually worth it for the third party element alone. It restricts length, speed, tidal waters and towing toys but for 13 policies it's been perfect for us as we've not wanted to stray outside the terms before.

The same general principles will still apply though. E.g you might want to leave it in a marina/mooring/pulled up on a beach/anchored whilst you nip ashore for lunch etc. This is why I said read the small print. The same with cruising areas, you might decide to go to the Continent on holiday & chuck the SIB in the back only to find that you're not insured. Insurance is mandatory in many countries.
Decide what your requirements are & find a policy that suits, otherwise you might pay for something that you don't need whilst missing something you do need.
Boat insurance is very different to car insurance.
