Anyone else out today?

Had a walk along the seafront and that was horrendous enough. The local boat had a slightly rougher time:

Thanks to knobs like this:

I think that is the general opinion reading the comments. According to the paper they had the RNLI, a helicopter and three coastguard teams looking for him.

The surfer involved was found walking along the beach with his surf board, cold but unhurt he was taken to hospital to be checked out but released without treatment.
Another case of the public panicking thinking someone was in danger when actually they weren't.
Are we to condemn anyone who pushes the boundaries of their pastime because others think they are in danger when actually they aren't

The storm was well documented before the weekend, and in my opinion the surfer looked completely out of their depth. Deep shelving pebble beach, and they took a few tumbles in the surf and current. Could have quite easily gone the other way. Hats off to the RNLI, that was atrocious conditions to respond to.

We've been the subject of a Pan Pan before simply minding our own business fishing and drifting out of Crovie during the summer. Some good samaritan thought we had engine trouble. Nothing we could do about it. We spoke to Coastguard, but you can't stand them down once the call has been made!

The storm was documented which is probably what attracted him and other adrenaline junkies to go surfing which requires big waves which you get in storms.
The lifeboat launched and wasnt needed in the end, the guy obviously didnt call them and after all the fuss he probably wishes someone else hadn't but thats the thing whats fun to some is stupidity to others.

I totally agree the rnli did the right thing to err on the side of caution but who are we to condemn a man for enjoying his chosen extreme sport. Some would say its crazy to go to sea in a small boat but we do.
Where do we stop with the whole "he's an idiot & shouldnt be doing that" people might say its stupid to jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane with only a bit of cloth to save your life but lots do it.
I just think we should cut folk some slack with the whole judgement thing

I see what your saying and to some extent agree but the vast majority have back up & risk assess, surfing in a storm with a wet suit & surfboard alone to joe public living in risk adverse society will ring alarm bells.

Risk adverse or not if he was on his own he had zero plans to manage risk, lost board, exhaustion, swept out to sea, concussion. Which means he figured it wouldn’t happen to him or he didn’t care. Either way in those conditions with no plan it was stupid
