I got one of them from the port solent gang just under £500. Does the job fine only niggle for me is it doesn't keep distance travelled on a route.
Its end of line so should be cheaper. Someone here got one for £400 quip.

Thanks for that was beginning to think this was a garmin only thread.
When your buying your first rib/equipment you get advice from all angles and can be expensive mistakes.

is it liek the Garmin plotters where the base map is so simple you really need the bluechart chips at 300 quid a piece?
Or do Navman sell it with a detailed base map?

300 quid for a blue max chip is bloddy pricey you should be able to get the Bluechart cd chip and pc connector for under 200.

Yes should be cheaper on Cd but otherwise from Garmin at least its £300 for the large charts and £200 for the small ones.

Steve,
Re Navman - I have a 5600. Stunning plotter, but if the mounting bracket on the 5500 is the same as the 5600 I would not use it on a rib. No problem if you are surface mounting though? Software is C-Map, the NT version - I do route planning on the PC at home and then upload to the plotter. Great.
Re Garmin fishfinders - see my thread on the 160 Blue. I checked some old threads on this forum, and would agree with the guy who said "Garmin - great GPSs, crap fishfinders".
Mike
Wavethumper - Navman basemap is useless.
BTW Steve - do you need full DSC? How about the Icom 401?

Have a look at the new Silva S10, it's a cut down version of the S15 but retaining the DSC funtion. Oh it sells for about £200, look at Pumpkin marine.

Thanks for your reply's
I was thinking of having the 5500 flush mounted so tink thats the way to go there.
As for the vhf I thought may as well get DSC as its the latest spec and will become the norm. Re silva I'm sure they are as good as the icom but seems everyone recomends icom. But cost wise silva looks good value for money.

There's no choice, really. You wouldn't buy an analogue 'phone would you? As for Silva v Icom, you could buy three of the budget (non-navtext) Silvas for the price of the Icom 601. And there's loads of reported probs with recent Icom units - W'humper have water ingress, Daniel can't get the MMSI programmed, Jools had problems with the auto-Ch 16 with the mike bracket earthing, etc. I've come to the conclusion that the ideal VHF doesn't exist!

I'd PM jwalker to get the view of somebody who's actually got one, otherwise you're just getting "brochure advice". Chrisallse was planning to get one as well - don't know if he's fitted it yet.

Well ive just come back from geurnsey. Boat is on order, should get the money to him tomoro morning.
The boat are amazing. The 6.5m hull is the dam deepest vee ive ever seen at 26 degrees!
All the others are at 23 degrees, still deeper than most other boats though.
It really is a shed ther're working from but everything seems well finished. didnt get a sea trial, but it was blowing a force 5 so it wouldn't have been all too pleasant.
Ian, im having a Garmin 176 plotter, 160 fishfinder????? i think, and a XM DSC radio.
I see there is a big thread all about how poor the 160 fishfinder is but Jason mounts the transponders into the hull so there is no problems with is flicking up at high speed etc.
Still unsure of delivery time but he says he'll get my hull layed up before they start the 10m rib.

Uh? Ideal RIB testing weather! No point in testing in anything less, really.

That would sort of put a damper on the proceedings!
