How much higher in the water will a 5.4m sit with the hull blocked off? Will the tubes still basically sit in the water at rest?
Been pondering this mod for a while...

I have seen a few SR54 unloaded with the hull blocked off that lean on one tube at standstill.
If you have a heavy engine, and maybe the fuel tank at the back, the tubes should touch the water though.

Hmmm.... Yamaha 90 two-stroke and 12 gallons of fuel against the transom. Only 335 lbs with full fuel. I still might have to try it this summer.

Thanks Matt - I like it. That little extra bit of freeboard looks nice.
Is that a 50 or a 60? (Either way, probably very similar to the 263 lbs of my two stroke)

Thanks
Next question, I assume with someone standing in the boat, it settles down perfectly, correct?
(Besides thinking about this for myself, I'm trying to help a guy out here in California that just picked one up. He's definitely going 4 stroke. Honda 90 was the cheapest, then 70 Yamaha, then 90 Yamaha. I told him to wait and get it in the water first but this will be something to think about for him)

the honda 90 is overweight for a SR. max ideal weight is 130 and below, not 160 territory. the best engine for a SR5.4 is the yam 90 at 120kgs

Of course it is but we haven't been able to buy Yamaha 90 two strokes new since approx 2004. And, a used one in great shape is >$4000.
I got got lucky and found mine basically pristine and unused (100 hours) but it's an '89 . I still paid $2500 for it.
When I was engine shopping, I asked about fitting a new Yamaha 70 four stroke (257 lbs) and was told (by persons here) that I would be extremely underwhelmed by the performance.
I know the Etec 90 and the Tohatsu are 320/337 lbs, respectively, and the Honda and the Yamaha 90s are 355 and 366 lbs, respectively. I've heard of people happy with the Etec 90 and see (but not talked) to a guy with a Yam 90 (4-stroke).
There's probably not much I can to to to dissuade him from a 90 four stroke. So, at best, I can advise him to block the hull and sure his fuel tank is not against the transom (and maybe stow dive gear in the bow). It's tough to convince someone that the perfect engine is 12+ years old and used!
Thanks to the picture of the blocked hull. I think in all my Google searches, I don't think I'd ever been able to find one.

It will settle down - sort of. It will still be quite wobbly.
IMHO there is no "real" reason for blocking off the flooding hull. It gives great advantages when stationary or during displacement speeds and it quickly drains off once you are planing.

Better racing boat out there than Seariders, though.

I'm sure I'd plane quicker with my hull blocked. But that's not why I'm interested in [temporarily] trying it - I don't like the 2" of freeboard at the transom when I'm drifting. If I get water over the transom, then I need to get on plane, drop the trunks, and let everything drain. So, it's not just the 220 kgs of water in the hull slowing my time to plane, it's the water inside the boat too.
Like it said, I want to try a temporary block and see how I like it.

Even as blocked the 5.4 hull is very stable, and still the transom is low(but higher). One other good thing with blocking is that the the risk for getting the transom and deck(plywood composite) wet, is slightly reduced. never looked back after doing mine, and the space is still
totally dry after 5-6 years, can feel dust with the fingertip.
Sure the weight of a Yam 90 is optimal, but guess by playing around with weights(possible slightly moving console), also with a heavier engine the same LCG can be achieved(would mean same balance), although total weight would be higher.
