Avon SR4
I have an early 90's SR4 with a 40Hp ex RNLI Mariner (Yamaha). Its manual start and I am not getting any younger.
Has anyone updated one of these engines to electric start or if I go for an engine change has anyone fitted a four stroke, worried about the extra transom weight and any performance problems.
Love the boat and the performance.

I believe all you need to add is the different fly wheel and starter. Don't believe that year came with teeth on the fly wheel.

Thanks for the help. Yes the flywheel is without teeth and I assume I need to track down a motor with a mounting bracket, does the fuel pump get in the way

Sadly last time I called woods they said they didn't have any, told me the web site is way out of date.

Don't you need charge coils, solenoid and rectifier / regulator too and extra wireing harness to connect it all together?
I'd imagine it's easier to sell yours and buy another unless you can find a dead donor to get all the bits off

Not sure but I believe the mil spec motors have the charge circuit Got rid of two of them last month so can't go check. I believe it's just a couple of wires that connect into the solenoid?

If I stay 2 stroke I can probably match the Yamaha engine weight and perhaps pick up Oil injection and save another hassle and maybe even get a three cylinder engine.
The present Mariner/Yamaha is a brilliant engine probably done less than 50 hours, must be worth £600 or am I dreaming

Those engines hold their value probably better than any other engine. I just sold two one kind of running and one seized for parts at €300. I would not low ball it. I think you would get more then £600. Bring it to Ireland and you could get €1200.

Thanks John it has and still is a very reliable and trusty engine, so I am pleased the respect is shared, just the manual start that was not a problem till I had a heart op.
If I change it will be to another engine with the same street cred and all advice is welcome.
One minor problem is the through the tube steering which has a grease seal end cap that does not fit, while in Salcombe I thought I would buy one that does and I failed.
Every dealer agrees that there is only one size fits all for through the tube steering kit. But it would seem the engine tubes may all be the same diameter, but there are different external threads, my end cap does not fit my engine, but it fitted fine on a new Yamaha on the dealers rack, but not on a Suzuki, Nobody had an end cap for sale as I assume it came with the through the tube steering kit.
Not a big problem but fed up of adding grease and watch it drip on the transom.
I did receive assurances the boat was safe to use without it and I was not in danger of sinking from a well meaning sales man, I kept a straight face but it was not easy, I must look new to boats, or he deals with a lot of hooray henrys.
