I know lots of people have done the upgrade thing. I bought my first SR4 / 25Hp from a guy who had bought it as his first rib. He bought a bigger engine, put the 25 into preservation, then after a couple of years moved the bigger engine to his "underpowered" ribcraft 5.something, and sold the SR4 rig with the old 25 on the back to me. 2 years later he replaced the 50 on the ribcraft with a 90 having sold a low hours 50....

Having done many cruises / rescue type things with the SR4 / 25 Hp, there is nothing wrong with it. If Mextli want's a SR, then that's the boat for him.
I wasn't looking for a humber when I upsized, but my curent chariot appeared at a price I liked, so I bought it. (I was on the lookout for an SR4.7). Would I change back now? Doubt it. Does it now have a bogger engine than I bought it with ? Yes.....

I now have more than double the HP I had on that SR, with a very small weight increase.
I still cruise at 22-ish Knots. I still drink about 0.8-ish L/mile.

There's nothing wrong with that combo.

You've not gone that way too

IMHO biggest engine you can get or you're going to always be wishing for a bit more like alot of things in life.

I had a SR4 with a 50hp and it was great fun I don't think it would be very exciting with a 25hp on, But if you're on a river with a 6 knot limit I've got a 6hp at the right price and I'd seal the flooding hull.

Triggers SR4 sold

I'll just see ... Someone offered me a 50 HP Merc Short Shaft for a very good price...

Could that be matched with the SR by cutting out the transom or is that a very bad idea?

just asking ...

But the sailing clubs towing dinghies & marks do so at low speed, in which case a 10hp motor would be ok.

Don't do it.

I think Whisper has a 3 cyl 40hp L/S Yam for sale, which would go very nicely on an SR4 - may be worth having a word.

I seem to remember from previous topics that a SR4 with a (lightweight) 40hp 2S came very close to the heavier 50hp 2S in performance (pick up is a prioroty rather that a few more kts on the top end) - can anyone confirm this and suggest which 40 is the one to aim for? I'm looking in the near future for the lightest weight SR4 rig I can find to beach launch (in suitable seas) 2 up.

And the fuel consumption at WOT per hour?

Ok, I'm doing my best

As soon as i get the SR4 i'm aiming for, my posts will increase dramatically...

Another question

I am planning on repainting the whole boat, in the orange it used to be. How do i do that?

I know i have to sand down the original coat/antifouling/anything else then fill all the holes in the hull with gelcoat filler,

But what then?

Flip it over and spray it with 2-pack for the best finish.

Does anyone know if Gotchiguy has a little brother?

Its a type of paint which before you apply it you mix '2 packs' together. Unlike traditional paint where the bulk of what you spray down is thinners and evaporates off, most of 2 pack paint are chemicals that react together to form a hard layer. You get more paint down in a single coat, and get a harder finish.

Mextli - as a point of interest, what are the boating laws in Germany like? Do you need an official qualification to take a boat out on inland waters/rivers or coastal resorts etc? Is access easy?

Avon used to offer the 4m with a twin 25hp option.. maybe you should buy an additional 25hp!!

If you boat has more hp than 5 you need different licenses for inland/sea. I have both.
For using a radio you need another two licenses, I have those too.
I also have another license which allows you to pilot vessels over 25m on german waters.

The Acces to the water is relatively easy, all 25 river miles there is a slip, most of them are even and very easy to use.

Most Canals have speed limits though.

I haven't been much to the coast yet, and certainly not with a boat but there are some tide-independet slips...
