Awful broker! - are there really RYA and BMF rules of sale?
I went to a certain marina to view a 5-6m Humber. Exact size I'll keep quiet.
Turned up after a 2hr drive they knew we were doing to be told, they can't find the keys, there's no service history but thats fine as no boats have it. Really?
then saw the lower leg's been resprayed and the trailers rusted all over, wheels and bearings knackered.
Plus the transoms cut away to put a standard length shaft on, not XL. I asked and he said it was factory fit. Looks nothing like any transom I've seen on a Humber, about 2" freeboard!
When I asked if we could do an engine test he stated it was the british marine federation and RYA rules of sale that you agree a price, then pay 10% and then "they" do an engine test for which we pay. If any issues you get your money back.LOL I argued his point until blue in the face and then just walked. Anyone know anything about this practice?
Awful broker, Steer clear. Oh! And he wanted £11k ROFL, a new one with a 75hp and 5yr warranty is £17k
Buzzed back and had a run out for an hour on the strait to calm down and then home again.

I'd post a link to it so we can all ring him!
Sounds like he's making the rules up, I went to test drive a car once and he said I couldn't until I put a deposit down, told him to poke it.

I said I'd get the engine tested then talk.
He said he couldn't put under offer while i got the engine tested, until I paid deposit. I said fine, but I'm not giving you a penny until I want it.
He then said I couldn't do the test before paying a deposit as its British Marine Federation rules and also RYA practices of sale, that a deposit is paid before an independent test is done by "them". Then if there is a problem you get it back.
I said I disagreed and hadn't heard of the rules before so would agree to differ. I assume I'm right then?!

How can you agree a price until you've seen the engine run ? Surely you'll offer dependant on its performance ?
Go on, which marina ? Or at least which county/Town. Give us a clue

Agree entirely, awful practice. Certainly couldn't hear it run without keys! LOL
Don't want to get involved in it directly. I have nothing to gain. Glad i accompanied my friend. But want others to be aware of dodgy sales techniques with RYA and BMF thrown in for believability.

I agree 100%. If you had never bought a boat you may assume this was all 'normal'. Its shocking anyone still tries this type of selling nowadays.

Come on Paul, name him. You know you want to & we'll weedle it out of you eventually, so you might as well give in early

Its normal to expect an offer and deposit prior to a sea trial. Otherwise everyone would go joy riding and walk away.
But not to merely start an outboard.

I have nothing to gain from naming, all to lose from retribution by said broker
I just want new to rib or car purchasers to know this sales technique is bollocks. He even said, these aren't cars mate, they're boats and we have to stick to the rules.
Ironically he'd let me sea trial it prior to agreeing a price, but wouldn't let me plug in to ecu for history on the opti, or do compression test. His "independent" would.

Because some people, especially those who have poor sales ethics don't take criticism too well! Even if it's the truth.
