After I had the motor running in the Thames the other week, I made a mental note of all the gauge readings and checked that everything was ok, but it appears my water pressure was a little low at 0.7psi at tickover.
After a chat with Turbodiesel, I pulled the lower cowl off and removed/checked the poppet valve (circled) which appeared to have been reinstalled badly-a grommet had come adrift and was allowing the water pressure to drop. Rebuild pieces on the way-if it's apart, I might as well make sure it's good.It seems to be mentioned a lot on Optis and it's a bit awkward to take the lower cowl off with the motor rigged.
Started the long and grim job of cleaning the tubes as well. They come up well, but the rubbing strake appears discoloured.
Anyone know how to get the discolouration off without sanding it off? I'm thinking MEK as TFR has failed.

Mentioning no names, but I know of someone who uses MEK to bring the shine back to rubbing strake. Seems it disolves the surface layer, but as you suggested it you probably know this . Might remove dis-colouration, worth a try on a small area I guess.

I was told the hypalon thinners by henshaws? But the PVC thinners makes more sense although they are quite similar.

I didn't actually, thanks. I was only going to try it because I bought a gallon of MEK on ebay a few weeks ago as it was cheaper than buying a small pot from Force 4.

I did some research about two years ago on plasticiser migration and how the plasticiser from cables can migrate into other materials like polystyrene and then go brittle.
So I guess if something has migrated into the rubbing strake then it will be like a stain and can't be removed.
I've got lots of different stuff I can lend you next week if you want to give them a try .thumbs:

It's on the surface, but not deep so it's probably not migration.It does come off with abrasion, but it doesn't look right where it's been abraded.
It might even be UV damage as the tubes were never covered as far as I know before I bought it.
