Required for a charter boat, although I am at a loss to explain why on a boat that is limited to 20 miles in day light and favourable conditions. Recon you would get more information off a good weather forecast before heading out than looking at a barometer, just something else to corrode and fail miserably in the bottom of a wet locker.

Would my watch count? It has a barometer and altimeter combined - pretty accurate as well.

Soooooo, how is the standard procedure of tapping the barometer to determine if the pressure is going up or down going to work on a RIB. ????? DUH.

Why not try one of these?

http://www.suunto.com/suunto/main/index.jsp

My watch has been great - barometer is very accurate. They even do a GPS one as well now.

Hi
I use one of these tissot watches, it is similar to the suunto, I also find it very accurate and compass works well.

I bought something from Lidle or similar a while ago - looked a bit like a GPS but had a barometer and comapss built in - waterproof case and nice big digits - easily mount it on the dash.

Something like this

Bit of velcro and job done!!!

NASA Marine have recently introduced their Meteoman barometer.

It's around £130 and keeps 5 days history if you fancy a bit of forecasting.

Unfortunately, the unit is not waterproof (and possibly not too UV-proof either) as it is intended for cabin use.

Nonetheless, a good product if anyone's interested. If you want one for yacht or home use, there's also a masthead wind/temperature unit so you can get that info as well. Good for yacht clubs etc. Complete package is £229.95 More here

Hi Ezi,

some one above already mentioned how useful this may actually be.
Given that the rise and fall is normally (at wost) falling or rising slowly, you should get a very good idea here in Ireland on the West coast of a Falling rapidly. You will see it in the ominous cloud forms and Rollers ahead of Depression (normally from the West here). Furthermore given that the Rib Journeys are much shorter than Yacht runs, the Window of Time versus the change in weather combined with distance off shore would suggest that if you need one, as R Draefus says in Jaws"You need a bigger boat"

I am not giving a lecture but you will get sufficently more notice listening to 16 on the hour I would have thought. And with regard to tapping it (LL), If I may suggest that a good slap with a hammer will normally adjust the setting to anything you want if you hit it hard enough.

west Coast Requirements

Aidan

I am getting a bigger boat! And it is for the bigger boat that will be doing the longer journeys that I require it.

As you correctly mentioned the West coast of Ireland is open to the atlantic swells and even slight changes in pressure are indicative of changes hundreds of miles away which can make themselves felt within a few hours.

It is amazing how, on a perfectly windless summers day the atlantic swell can appear from nowhere causing serious changes in some harbour entrance bars and many anchorages. Often the forecasters do not appreciate these subtleties and the only way of spotting them is with a barometer.

Humminbird Barometer

I have an electronic one fitted to Bayshots. Not beause I really needed one, but they were giving them away as a promotion;so I thought why not
It plugs into my Matrix 87C and I mounted the sensor just below the wheel for protection.
You can display a total page showing history or as an icon on the bottom of depth or navigation displays.
I find it useful if you are planning on sitting on the water all day fishing or the like.
There was a funny story just after I had it, and went to the montains lake fishing. It displayed black clouds and dropped dramaticaly and yet it was a clear sunny day.I waved it off as a cheap gimmick and ignored it . 3 hrs later the biggest thunderstorm in 10 years hit us My boys never let me live it down
cheers Dal
