You're talking about him, not his brand. As I said, I'm sure he's smashing, and has done wonderful things, and I agree that he's a much better role model than <insert name of footballer/musician/film star here>. His brand is naff, and I don't like it.
On a slightly more contentious note: I'm not sure that I'd want my ideal role model to be quite such an avid self-publicist, but I'm probably being picky there.

Yes but I'm referring to the people that say they hate him.

You know what they mean though, they mean his public persona, his brand.
There's a scout troop near me who park their box trailer on the side of the road, and it's got a massive 6 ft picture of Bear's coupon on the side of it! It's a bit of 'cult of personality' type thing.
"there is Bear jumping from a Parker Arrow onto a hanging netting" - that's exactly the sort of thing that get's on my tits. Why is he jumping onto it as the boat speeds past? If he needs to get onto it from the boat would it not present a more responsible role-modelly type image if the helmsman came in nice and slow and safely? I bet he wasn't wearing a lifejacket either!
Like in his born survival show which appear to suggest that the safest most efficient way of getting into the wilderness was to freefall in from 20,000ft... FROM A CHOPPER! If it was a plane at least you could say maybe there's nowhere to land... but it's a helicopter ffs. It's all about looking cool.

I don't like the programmes that much - especially when they had to put captions over it to explain that he hadn't just stumbled across the mega poisonous snake, but it had been placed there for "televisual purposes", or some such rubbish!! I get what they are trying to do - but it's like they decied to make nature programmes presented by James Bond on steroids - it doesn't work for me.
Having said that - I found him and his son sitting on my RIB in Pwllheli Marina one afternoon a few years ago - mine had been put into his spot by the guys servicing it - so he was waiting for me to turn up and move it. He was very pleasant - we chatted for a bit (mostly about the weather and his island), and we then went on our way. Nice bloke.

Yes, I saw that. It was just after the bit where he jumped out of my friend's Redbay (cliffs in the background). Both were before the bit where he said that he'd tried every RIB there is and his were the best...
If he ever needs chucked out of a RIB again, I have dibs on first go

Me first, I tell you!
I will tempt him by making it merely APPEAR more dangerous than it really is.
Then I'll cheat

Oh he's fine. It's TV. If John Noakes could "big -up" planting a Daffodil then this chap is fine. He's a real life BATMAN. Of course it's all for telly, but it's not for us, it's for ten year olds. That's the target audience, the fact that parents watch is bonus. Unless you actually watch it on your own, then you are special. It's not a bad show and the fact that they have disclaimers means that Bear targets a younger audience, albeit one that is already in the groove, (as it where).
He's also got some Bear Grylls pants.

I agree, having met him just whilst boating at a Marina with his family I found him a very amicable person with a lovely family. I wish him well with these boats
