So, based on the posts above, have I got this right?

Bear Grylls has designed his "image" to appeal to the 8-16yo market, explaining the breathless drama and the outlandish scenarios so we should cut him some slack and exjoy the show...

Fair enough, but who are these kids who are buying the Madera RIBs?

"there is Bear jumping from a Parker Arrow onto a hanging netting" - that's exactly the sort of thing that get's on my tits. Why is he jumping onto it as the boat speeds past? If he needs to get onto it from the boat would it not present a more responsible role-modelly type image if the helmsman came in nice and slow and safely? I bet he wasn't wearing a lifejacket either!

Like in his born survival show which appear to suggest that the safest most efficient way of getting into the wilderness was to freefall in from 20,000ft... FROM A CHOPPER! If it was a plane at least you could say maybe there's nowhere to land... but it's a helicopter ffs. It's all about looking cool.
He was made chief scout not because he can jump out of helicopters, but because he is a genuinely nice guy with a genuine want to help and inspire people.

"In 2000 Grylls led the first team to circumnavigate the UK on a personal watercraft or jet ski, taking about 30 days, to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). He also rowed naked for 22 miles in a homemade bathtub along the Thames to raise funds for a friend who lost his legs in a climbing accident."

"Grylls is an ambassador for The Prince's Trust, an organisation which provides training, financial, and practical support to young people in the United Kingdom.[16] He is also vice president for The JoLt Trust, a small charity that takes disabled, disadvantaged, abused or neglected young people on challenging month-long expeditions."

Anyway, back to his ribs.

Still, there is a Scouting connection in the story: "The boat was seized and after the court case, where both occupants were given prison sentences, the brand-new boat and engine were given to the local Sea Scouts!"

Maybe its not Bear that's gone for this. Maybe there's a RIB manufacturer that's trying to cash in?
Eh?

I'll add my tuppence worth. I've never met Bear Grylls, but its fair to say if I'd had, I like to shake his hand. It's not every day you meet someone that's climbed Everest, been in the SAS TA, been an ambassador for the scouts, crossed the Atlantic in a RIB... yadda yadda.

He obviously loves what he does, and goodness knows its better than doing 9 to 5... or in my case 8 to 8.

As Oddball would say in Kelly's Heros... 'Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?'

I have seen some of his programmes, and do think some of the stunts he pulls off are a bit on the dodgy side, jumping off waterfalls, always going deep into caves, but realise without it, the programmes would not get the audiences they do. I think a lot is probably the producers getting him to do stuff that appeals to the target audience.

However having recently read Bear's book about how he came back from being potentially paralysed at 19 after a helicopter crash whilst in the SAS, to become (at that time) the youngest person to climb Everest at 22, and the journey, fundraising, and expedition to do that, it really changed my opinion of him, it shows a person with real drive and determination to beat the odds, and for me was quite enlightening.

Now Ray Mears is an excellent example,of a very level headed, and kowledgeable presenter, but nowhere near as dramatic.

I wonder if you were to ask a global audience which one they remember seeing on TV who would come out on top?

Aye - I was just checking to make sure that you read the entire article - the Scouts boats was indeed, not the Madera. The coppers kept the "nice" one for themselves.

On face of it, those old Crompton hulls still seem to appeal to the same "clientele"

I love this bit..... "The engines are rigged to a racing layout with the two out motors having XL legs and handed 21” Revolution 4 props; the centre motor has a 23” three-bladed Laser. This rig Royal Gibraltar Police Airset-up was advised by Lee, a former South African powerboat racer who works at Barrus and who used this set-up to good effect."

That'd be the same Lee who had a facebook page, until Barrus told him to remove it!
