There was some ideas going around a while back that some of the mysterious boating accidents and freak waves coming onto calm beaches were down to the sea cat type ferries kicking up strange steep wash in certain areas ,tide ,wind conditions from 8 to 10 miles away when transforming from displacement mode to planing,

i said sea cat TYPE ferries,,, ok then that bit going from slow to fast or from fast to slow,does that help .we dont get them in our area only the proper ships and ferries to norway germany and holland ,oh and a few decent size ones from australia and japan .

My RIB is no fun at all in a ship's wake - it barely jumps - smaller RIBs are much more fun!!!

as with most wash waves unless its a wall of water the boat will climb over the first wave ok but its in the trough of the next wave following close which does the stuffing when the boat is still pointing downwards.......i know the pic is not a ships wash ,,,,or a sea cat or a fast cat,

Yes, IIRC something to do with a long period low wave shoaling into a high wave, possibly combined with reflection off the sea bed creating constructive interference patterns...
Or summat like that.....

i know there not ribs, but the speed boat chases in the canals of amsterdam in both the feature films ,puppet on a chain and amsterdammed take some beating , have a look on you tube ,

I agree - Amsterdammed is a favourite of mine - I think some of those speedboats were old British classics like Shakespeares and Phantoms.
