Area Forecast - Issued: 0800 UTC Mon 23 Dec

Wind Southwest 7 to severe gale 9, veering west severe gale 9 to violent storm 11 perhaps hurricane force 12 later. Sea State High or very high, perhaps phenomenal later. Weather Rain or squally showers. Visibility Moderate or poor.

Met office forecast for Shannon, never seen that before. Time to chuck another log on the fire & open a bottle methinks. Glad I'm not out in it Pity the poor sods who are

Yup - just looked again. Average winds will be 15 kts stronger. They are also predicting average wave heights of 8.5 metres. So you can expect the odd wave of nearly twice that!! A bad day to be at sea off Ireland on Friday!

Graphic Wind data

Here is the pattern from Hurst - after a short lull, since 8.00pm, the wind has not been far off 50kts - and spiking up to nearly 70kts. I have a small flagpole on the rib frame which is now bent over at 90 degrees!

Which is why you only see me 'working' on a boat in summer.:-)

Forecast I'm looking at says this will get worse again for next hour at least.

The Jetstream is currently running at 270mph; the highest ever recorded according to the Met Office, and the reason for the frequency and ferocity of storms crossing the Country.

The deepening low centred across the North West in the early hours of this morning fell below 930Mb. Again, one of the lowest ever recorded.

The Port of Poole Marina lost a section of their floating breakwater last night.
Not found yet, so if in the harbour take care.
Max wind speed in the harbour reached 68kts
