Boat and Jet ski World

Received a letter this morning from Southern Independent Auctions www.sia-group.co.uk seems Boat and Jetski world have gone into liquidation, thankfully no Ribs there just jet ski's . Its a shame that a company has gone bust but the market is slowing down for tuition and charters , sales and other products so it will be a lean winter for some schools out there . Has anyone else noticed this down turn in the market . I spoke to another guy who runs a school out of Hayling and he thinks there are too many schools all trying to get a slice of the pie. The trouble is only the good schools or those with a good cash flow are going to survive same goes for charter boats , there are alot of these now as well. Just some thoughts ?

Tim, been talking about this with Stu for a couple of months and think your right, slow down in the market. Gradual increase in interest rates (albeit with one recent reduction) housing market at best stagnant and the country been living the high life on credit cards for too long. Lots of big ribs for sale on Boats and Outboards at the moment, I do wonder if they are going to sell. The average family could probably raise £10k to buy a boat, but £20k - 25k for a second hand one, well thats completely different and serious cash so only a much smaller limited number of buyers.

Agree too many training schools and charter boats at the moment, some will disappear and hopefully leave a market which those remaining can make a reasonably living. Think its a case of chasing the clients this winter and lots of diversifying. Afterall think of how many fishing charter boat skippers work in the building trade when the weather is bad.

Pete

Hi Pete

I spoke to the dispatch office at RYA and certificates are down slightly but new schools opening every month so will keep figures up. I think you are right a few will disappear others will merge . Some businesses fall into the trap of expanding too soon and not doing there market research to see if the clients are out there.

Your not alone, selling furniture is no better! Nearly every week some one is going under in this trade! Courts, Furniture Land & Allders all gone recently!
It's bloody tough out there & it is not going to get better for some time me thinks!

Hi Tim

We had a quiet Aug in Southampton compared to Pwllheli. Things are now hotting up again in Southampton for October half term onwards. You can'y tell with cert sales as some schools order the in bulk.

Give me a shout if you need any work.

Regards

Jono
