I think a lot of local authorities have insisted ( via local byelaws) that any boats using 'their' harbours etc are insured. I'm not so sure about thier right / power to stop & demand you to provide proof of it .

I'm all for it personally - however its a pain mainly due to the way in which you can be 'asked' to show it ! Having said that I dont usually carry any paperwork on the boat with me as I worry about leaving it on the boat & it getting nicked & making it easier for someone to flog it on ! I cant see myself dragging it to the boat each time either !

I do however have small stcker ( like a tax disc) that I only get from the council once I have sent them a copy of my docs.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't

We keep ours, along with wallets, mobiles, car keys and other similar 'essentials', in a grab bag (fancy name for freezer bag!) and is always with us rather than always on the boat.

RIBase
Given the number of clueless idiots in shagged Fletchers and Drivers with knackered engines at Baiter this Sunday I'm beginning to think this is a good idea.
Trouble is, if legislation starts to appear, we'll be flooded with it...

This has been the case for a couple of years now down at Lyme, the good news is you can log your details with the harbour masters office and they wont ask you again... until renewal.I have been asked for proof of insurance a few times now,and have just laminated the top sheet of the policy to save any hassle.Another advantage of being able to print off copies from the net. I agree with Noss and co it has to be a good idea for everyone.

Rant:

Over on Anglesey, if you wish to use a council slip you first have to apply to and register with the local CC. £15 and supply them with a copy of your insurance details. You then are issued with a sticker that must be shown clearly on your ride. No sticker and your boat dont get wet!!

Oh and then your charged every time you launch, £13..I dont know where the cash goes but it aint spent on improving the facilities

Lymes great to you have a slipway and then an awful sand bank catches most people out must say. Hopefully going to be removed soon. Fed up with paying good money and still having a battle to launch at certain times !!
