boat naming
I am after some idea's on boat naming...the ones I thought of have lasted a few hours till back to the drawing board so I decided to look on here for inspiration and I have done some searches but it’s hard to find any previous conversations – as name is too short to search and boat name shows everything up as it has boat name in most profiles.
I am thinking of “Overseas” – as working overseas for the past few months has enabled me to buy the boat – but what are peoples thoughts on the ‘over’ and confusion with radio protocol?
Any other idea's?

I would keep it as simple as you can there must be 100,s to pick from and yes the name 'overseas' might get confusing, try saying it as if you calling a mayday 3 times with that name
I see your from Rochdale how about the name Rochdale Cowboy
if you can remember him
thats one for starters

Hi Steve,
Congratulations on your new boat hope you're going to have a lot of fun with it.
Your boat is currently called BARETTA (think it's a play on Ballistic?), so good luck with finding a new name for her - can't think they'll be any shortage of suggestions

Well, I am still unsure about that as well, as BERETTA is an Italian firearms manufacturer - and I have spent the last year working on a contract in Italy, and this has funded it - Perhaps its fate that I got that RIB, and perhaps it should just stay the same...

Sounds a good name to me - bad luck to change it!
Main thing as above is to do a few pretend transmissions with the intended boat name - think if you would sound an idiot when using it...
I'm a huge Tintin fan (original Herge stuff not Spielberg) and wanted to use 'Blistering Barnacles' or 'Captain Haddock' but the idiot test above stopped me...

Neither - racked our collective brains for ages, tried out many of the vessel names that featured in the various Tintin books over the years too but none were quite right. The boat ended up being named after the kids.

Long time since I put a boat on the small Ships register, just a thought if you ever do they used to be very keen on not using wrong sounding names or upsetting anyone even more so if going abroad,
Suppose captain pug washes mate would be out too lol

Not this old myth again
Just for clarity
Capt. pugwash's crew consisted of Master Mate, Tom the cabin boy (not Roger) and there was NO seaman Staines.

Think dangerous aircraft, guns or missiles (though preferably not anti-ship missiles - "Exocet closing on the port bow" might provoke an entirely unwelcome reaction from a warship!)
I toyed with loads of names. Anything too long (more than about three syllables) is out, anything that sounds like a Boney M song is obviously out, and anything that would make you sound stupid or like a weekend sailor on the radio is out.
That's where 'Seawolf' came from as it was short and snappy for the radio, and it fits with the theme of being grey and quick
Beretta is good on all of the above. Phalanx is another one that made my shortlist (it's a cannon). Swordfish (plane). Hellfire (missile). Tigerfish (torpedo). I was nearly going to call it Firefox but decided that I'd get bored with people asking me why I named it after a web browser...

Must confess having spent the best part of my 60+ years around boats and harbours I still subscribe to the old thought, never change a boats name. I know the thinking behind it is not relevant nowadays but its still a tradition.
