Boating back in 1974...

Just been reading quite a fascinating book - Power Boats and Rough Seas by Dag Pike.
It was written in 1974. This paragraph made me chuckle..

Within the Chapter 'Drogues, Sea Anchors, Sails and Oil'

"RNLI Lifeboats are fitted with nozzles on each side of the boat amidships through which oil can be pumped with a semi-rotary hand pump. In this case the oil is normally used to reduce breaking seas around a casaulty so that survivors can be taken off with less risk. The operating lever for the pump is labelled 'Wave Subduer' which is a slightly optimistic description..........."

Well things have moved on since then!!!
