reading the posts it seemed that ky just wanted to know numbers to see if she could get a deal somewhere, i think all she wanted was people to register a FIRM interest before she went shopping, in true form it turned into a marathon and she got the hump, in a nut shell i think that if your'e up for one cheaper than you can get it normally than register your interest and take the option to buy if she gets the deal, but she don't sound like the type of person you want to pissoff, i must say i'm looking forward to meeting the family, she sounds like someone who could arrange some good cruising once they get use to there boat and that will be down to me after christmas

Hi and peaceful holidays for everyone. Has been great fun reading the threads of this forum. Good spirit and plenty of usefull advice. First icebrakers over here are already operational, thus wil take some time befor boating season starts again.

"McMurdo Fastfind 210 406 Mhz GPS PLB" seams like the optimal safety device for my needs. Thus i am interested to participate in the EPIRB Bulk Buy.

However there might be one catch, noted the following statement in the user manual.

"USER REGISTRATION
The PLB,s unique identifier must be registred with the national authority indicated in the
white area on the rear of the PLB"

So if the unit is purchased from UK, can it be registred in other location/country as it seams like the coutry code is already fixed in the unit? Or to put it another way, if I purchase the unit from UK, can i get it with my own country code?
Mayby thinking in too comlicated maners but better be on the safe side, as authorities over here are very strict on such issues.

Would be gratefull for any advice, thanks.

The McMurdo 210 will be factory encoded with a UK specified HEX code. I'm not in the UK (by a gnat's whisker) and bought a UK encoded PLB. The UK authorities were happy to register it/me, even with a foreign vessel callsign and personal details. They were Top Blokes!

My understanding was UK CG would only accept registrations from UK vessels and that within the 15 digit hex number was the MID (same as MMSI mid ( 232, 233, 234 or 235 for UK) which identifies your country.

Logic would suggest this. However, the MCA have my Irish callsign and personal details registered and a phonecall to Falmouth confirmed this. It's an odd world

OK, thanks for the advice/reply. Thus it seams like the units are factory encoded with a country/market area specified HEX code.

I wonder can a UK reseller deliver(order from the factory) a unit with a HEX code intended to another country/market area?

Have a very sefish reson for this question, the price level for those units over here is ridiculously high compared to the UK level.

Hi All

Gradually getting back to normal - what ever that is - and will start ringing a few suppliers next week for prices.

Re the London Boat Show - will also see what we can get there - we will be going later in the month so I'm fitter for walking and standing longer - so please don't expect any instant results.

Thinking through the logistics - clearly much will depend on the seller - but ideally we need to independently buy the item so they can be shipped to our home addresses and we have purchased "direct" for warrenty.

For the Boat Show it would make sense for me to take your mobile number and maximum price (I will get Marine Superstore to quote again and we can use this as the bench mark) - if I can beat the "current" best deal I will ring you and see if you wish to go ahead and purchase - once I know this - I will then ring through with the seller present for you to pass card details etc etc over.

If anyone had a better plan re the Boat Show then let me know - it's a bit fussy and time consuming for me but seems the most straight forward for everyone else

Hi all

Will check in the moring with the Communications Regulatory Authority over here the procedures for registering the unit.

Here a copy paste from FastFind homepage
*****
Fast Find Personal Location Beacons (PLBs) should be purchased in your country of residence and must be registered with your national authority. Each Fast Find is programmed for a specific country and can only be registered in the country for which it has been programmed. However, if you were to purchase a Fast Find in a country other than the one in which you reside, you do have the option to have it reprogrammed to the country code of your country of residence but, this will of course involve additional cost. This can be discussed further with your supplier******

Guess that the PLB country code can be updated here( to 230?) or optionally(for me the best sollution) if it would be delivered with the correct country code in the first place (against a reasonably charge if required)

Knot Yet, if you give me some time, will try to confirm ASAP.

Thanks Knot Yet.

Checked this code issue and it does not look easy. Over here You must first apply for the permit to use a PLB. Then the Communications Regulatory Authority will give you the identification code, that the dealer will program in to the fastfind 210. A very weird way....but so it is how those units are sold and used here.

So to conclude: If You can ask the seller when delivering the bulk buy order, if they can deliver one unit with a a later on given code, and they can, I confirm attending.

I would pay the unit, wait for my code, provide it to supplier in UK and then receive the unit with the given identification code. If they can't, no problem. If this "requirement" is giving too much headache, just forget it, no problem again, this is out of spec compared to the "normal" orders anyway.

Good luck with your purchase

This is true, as I remember the work it caused.

The units were a new product when I worked at McMurdo, and I was invloved in setting up finished goods part numbers and a Bill of Materials cascade for 137 different versions, which was a multiple of all the countries the various specs(GPS, Non GPS etc) could be sold in.

The really interesting thing is the differance in legislation regarding which countries will let you use them on land, the UK still won't as the authorities say they do not have the resources to respond in remote areas on land.
Unless thats changed in the last 6 months.

Nasher.

There is a double-think taking place with PLBs. Some countries have embraced them, others just want to cop a quick feel. Ireland has been very slow on this front and because of this I had to buy a UK unit (retailed in Ireland, God help us) and register it with the MCA. For this kind service, I am eternally grateful. Granted it may be because they haven't realised we've left the Union as such . Anyway, no matter where you buy, register or use a PLB, when you press the button it works... I do multi-day solo hill walks and my illegal PLB is a constant companion*. Ditto at sea where it is not allowed by local statute. In keeping with the spirit of the thing, I will only press the Big Red Button if my life depends on it.

Buy it, and they will come.

They can prosecute my living ass later

* It will be strolling the hills of La Gomera in two weeks, no doubt illegally.
