Which half did you do the HPI check on?
Mr
kk@decor82.fsne - there's some true words said here. When I bought, I mitigated the risks by buying from someone I knew, and I had got to know many of his friends so effectively references had been taken! If you're buying from someone you've never met before then the advice to use a solicitor as an intermediary may have some value. I think that using a thug as an intermediary may have more practical use though... you could make it clear to the vendor that if there's any future comeback, he may lose his kneecaps. The question to you is... are you suspicious of the vendor? And why? If you are, then walk away from the sale. You're certainly right to ask for paperwork - there should be an original bill of sale for the boat and for any additional equipment fitted. There should be an engine log book. And if the current owner isn't the first owner, ask for all the receipts in the chain. The more that's missing, the more suspicious the vendor is.

Why does that mean it's not dodgy?
Boats aren't as straightforward as cars, it's a jungle out there! You need to keep your wits about you and trust in your instincts about people. And as for the banter... many a true word said in jest.
Best of luck with your new purchase.
