Capsize!

My new RIB named "Flipper" was all new on friday.

We cruised on down to Caenarfon Bar to find the ruff stuff, well we found it. Wind over tide in about 3m of water. Most boat stayed in the calm (Shown Above), while me and my best mate in my new 5.7m boat, and Ribster Rache and Family in their 6.5 Osprey went to play in the big surf. I've been there loads of times in big seas playing on my own.

When surfing back down the waves we ended up on top of a monster breaker, while shouting ye ah and having a great time, the wave was deapening and catching up with other waves making it larger and larger. We were in to far to powerback so had no option put to carry on with it. As we landed off the wave we were trimmed up and using large amounts of power, we took a big bang off the wave chucking us both to the deck with the bolster seat still between my legs and pulling the kill coard off slightly and flicking the kill switch, we were now broad side to the breaking wave and it passed underneath us, i thought to my self we nearly went over then. I quickly flicked the switch back on with kill coard attached and put some power on to get us out of the next wave, but it was to late the wave had got us and we inverted. It through me about 6ft clear of the boat and My best mate Andy about 10ft clear (hes lighter than me).

Be both grouped together, auto life jackets went off and we were quickly picked up by Cracker with my other half on board. A quick call in to the coast guard to let them know what had happend and that we didnt need any assistance (dont send the lifeboat, over)and would call them when all safe. We then grabbed a rope of cracker and went to rig a righting bridle on the RIB. By this time we had drifted in to calm water, as shown above. We attempted to right the rib but as we were now in a calm area we didnt have the surf to help us (and the fact that i am only 10 stone didnt help). A little help from cracker and she was over, we quickly rigged a tow and back to the slip with no one hurt.

The engine got a good going over in the Mariner Agents work shop last night and should be fine this morning.

Thank you to cracker and stedj for their help, and to David for picking up by Bolster Seat (Everything else was tied in).

Sorry to hear about this Jono. Glad you are all ok and well. Not a pleasent experience. We got thrown from our boat this year but fortunately we were on fresh water and the boat stayed the right way up!!!

Thanks for sharing details as we can all learn from it.

So glad you all are OK and managed to get out of a very difficult situation.

If something like that can happen to an experienced Instructor, it can certainly happen to anyone.

I think it was more over confident and a bit silly than anything else. We really shouldt of been there in a small boat with such big surf. I think ive done very well not to have done it in the past considering the limits ive pushed it to.

hi jono thanks for a good day hope your engine goes well on ebay.

could have happened to any one alls ok and thats wat matters are u shaw it was slight to moderate

any way ive got most of it on vid good display on how to right a rib nice to see every one else hope to see u all soon ste dj

WOW! Glad to hear everyone is OK. I assume you were both wearing dry suits. That water must be nasty cold right now!

Lessons to be learned here - good job everything went ok.

Do you think it would still have happened without the kill cord?

What do you attach a righting bridle to?

Excellent - Well Done - I would love to be out in conditions like that but would always shy away for 2 reasons - 1. I'm always out with my kids. 2. i would chicken out as i wouldn't be confident of being able to get the rib back over should disaster happen like it did to you.

Maybe when the kids have left home and the boat is not so new anymore - i too will brave some extreme wave riding.

Im glad everything worked out - did you break anything at all (I hope not) and how much did it cost to get the engine overhauled.

Some people will look at this as a complete disaster - but I bet now you've come through it and look back it was a hell of an adventure. (I'm not trying to say you would do it voluntarily or anything)

Its one of the difference between owning a bigger boat and a small tiller steered rib or sib - When i was younger i never even thought twice about playing in surf off the beach in a 3.something meter Metzeler we had with a 15hp on the back - because you new that you could recover if the worst happened and you flipped over.

I think maybe i will by a zapcat and keep the 585 out of breaking waves - now how am I going to explain to the wife we need a second boat

Bit of a bummer, new boat and all. Glad no one was injured. Dented pride and cheque book but that appears to be all.

It seems the more experienced and qualified we become, the further we push the limits, whilst trying to find out what the absolute limit is.

Be interested to see any video or pictures.

Glad to see you guys are all ok and safe, looks like you guys went thru a nightmare there. Is there anything you could/would have done differently on reflection that would have got you out of that situation when the wave was building? If ever i was in that situation i would like to know my options..and it is good to hear from someone experienced like yourself.

Could you tell me how you rig a bridle to right a flipped boat? How does the bridle work etc? Never gone over and hope never to do so but maybe a good idea to be prepared.

Whilst it does not matter now, if the kill cord had not come out would you have been OK do you think, i am just interest and i no way poking the finger
