Car carrier stuck on the bank in Southampton tonight
To be fair to all out there yesterday was cluster##### as I called SOlent Coastguard about 0730-0800 and they stated no exclusion was in place around ship but yo listen to VTS and 16 for any updates.
I saw a tweet in the day from HAmpshire MArine cops stating 100 m which at that stage was never ratified by any order, I know I was looking all day even whilst out filming. The radio gave out an update at about 3pm on a 100 yard exclusion and that was first time I heard all day on any channel. As we see later they set a 200m one!
VTS issued one at 3pm in written. Format that reached emails by early evening. yes some were closer but whether any issue as no work being done and if they can't get Mariners notices in place can they enforce anything? security is about all I can think off

We ( AJ , Matt , & I ) stayed a respectful distance away around the 100m distance at a guess based on it being 180m long . I think due to the fact if it moved we didn't want to be anywhere near it ....
I think as it became more 'known about' it got busier and dafter ?
reports of a ribnobber being busted in an SR4 could be true - but he had wonky glasses so was let off.......

Understand it has a load of Bentley motor cars onboard, which have now shifted.

Glad nobody was badly hurt or killed.
I guess we can all now speculate what happened as no harm in doing so. My guess being that if large heavy machinery on board, ie concrete crushers, larger than normal plant etc and difficult weighted cargo on board - strapping that lot down would be a lot different to normal cars etc. The center of gravity would be perhaps unknown and not done very regularly. Once the ship started that long sustained port turn around the bramble bank I guess the list previously noticed coming down Southampton Water was accentuated and perhaps the cargo then started to move. Perhaps tilt alarms sounded on the bridge and all hell let loose. Pilot felt she was going to turn turtle and turned hard into the bank.
Great job if this turns out to be the case. However if listing coming down Southampton Water from leaving dock side, perhaps should not have carried on in the first place.

To be fair C2RIBS VTS were giving out Securite messages from around 10am. We then heard the next at 11am. So again it seems many out there just don't listen to port ops or choose to ignore :/ ah well its a definite criminal offence now with the DfT involved!

just sounds like a replay of this one off Cyprus. The Zenobia sank, eventually, after the computer allegedly decided to fill one side with water ballast. Dived the Zenobia whilst over there carrying out powerboat training for a dive centre. Line up of Foden/Erf or whatever lorries still hanging on their deck chains. "don't swim below the lorries! They have been hanging there a long while and eventually.........."

With the greatest respect! Regardless of any interest in this incident I suspect that like a major car crash on a motorway the authorities trying to deal with the incident are not likely to be particularly sympathetic to sightseers. Are you not slightly offline suggesting VTS should be concentrating on supplying up to date info to a few rubber boats when they were concerning themselves with rather urgent issues regarding the safety of large ships navigating in and out of a major port ?

Further to earlier comment and again with respect! Why on earth would you require a legal notice to "stay out the way?"
I trust most sensible rib nobbers on this forum would have the common sense to stay well out the way without any such requirement - and in particular avoid irritating those in authority trying to deal with what is clearly a major incident.

If you read my posts I was working with media film crews and asked specifically for this info before even leaving marina. it was not forthcoming and I would not put crew/boats in any position of danger or hinder recovery etc etc. I was also told there was no restriction in place.
On first day there was no recovery plan to move said vessel, two tugs on hold to assist if needed and all crew were off vessel.
Yes I saw boats too close for my liking.
Yes authorities dealing with event and I saw no one hinder them. I am not protecting anyone who might have gone close. (Same could be said of a road closure at an accident. If road is left open people travel down road. Simplistic yes.)
On this first day no casualties to extract, no loss of life , a grounded ship and authorities Port and your guys(guess?) had been on scene and left and came back several times
My calls to coastguard and VTS were made well before actually leaving base with clients to ensure I knew of any issues and was told there were none, I retweeted The Hants Marine police note asking for 100m. Are you suggesting this was all wrong?

I was with the HM harbourmasters on Sunday morning and you can trust me. Nobody knew what they were doing. It was an err umm huh umm well morning. They have a mammoth task ok there hands and I suspect what's going on on this forum is going on with all the companies involved in the salvage.
They need to focus on the CG. Support the listing side. Ballast needs sorting then dredge under the keel. Weather won't procrastinate. It will just pull that off the bank and sink it in the deep water channel

This will be an interesting salvage. In opposite to dry bulk vessels, think car carriers typically need to have ballast on board also in laden condition to maintain acceptable stability. Most likely cars/cargo was all lashed at the time of accident, don't expect cargo shifting to be the initial reason of list.
Ballast Wing tanks have a huge impact on the listing angel of the vessel so one possible cause is that due to human error or technical issues(valve/pipe failure) port side tanks had less or starboard had more water than planned. To keep vessel stable they would theoretically need to increase the amount of ballast, thus also draft will increase and it will be harder on ground... Discharging the cargo in current condition is close to impossible, this will defo not be an easy one to solve. Maybe dredging in combination with outside support/flotation/crane? Good thing that no lost seaman and that it did not block totally the fairway.

The cars are lashed one at the time with so little room between them that there is not enough room to walk on the car deck. Everything will be scraped under strict control by the insurance companies. This to avoid that anything find its way to the grey market.
The vessel on the other hand will be take a little effort to save.

From the letters page of today's Times newspaper,
"Sir, the multistorey car park we ordered for the 2015 Bramble Bank cricket season has been positioned too close to the wicket (News, Jan 4). It has encroached onto the outfield and is obstructing the square leg umpire's view. Our team captain is also asking why the pilot chose high water to carry out his pitch inspection. Please can some maritime expert let Bramble Bank Cricket Club know how this unexpected pitch invasion came about and when they think play can resume again."
