you should try Alderney. Its nearer than Jersey, smaller, quieter and much, much nicer!

Going by boat? If so, then Alderney would be a good base and you could then visit the French coast or the other islands if you wanted.

If the weather is good, Alderney would be ideal.

If you do take your own boat watch out for the tides - massive range and fast currents - especially around Alderney.
I suspect you aren't taking your own boat all the way from Norway in which case don't worry - there are loads of little ferries and there are even 2 of the big Quinquari RIBs operating out of Guernsey and Jersey.
Guernsey is a lovely place - the food is excellent if you like seafood - amazing lobsters etc.

I'll second that! The Channel Islands are *the place* for seafood. The scallops are beautifull!

Thanks !
Found this site http://www.alderney.gov.gg/ , but cant find any info with temperatures for land or water. Must have warm weather and warm water
I willl not bring my boat. The last 6 weeks I have been in the boat 6-8 hours a day, 6 days a week. This is also the reason why I dont go on a rib safari with wife and kids this summer. Need a rib brake.

Have a look at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/
Just type in the place you want - think it works worldwide - not just UK.
Not many people realise the Channel Islands are part of the UK but not part of the EU - lucky them!!!

You know, I promised myself not to reply to your posts, but once again you come up with such drivel as though you are the Fountain of all Knowledge, I cannot help myself!! The Channel Islands are NOT part of the UK You spend five minutes in Guernsey and suddenly you are the authority on all matters concerning CI. Also, why are we so bloody lucky...?
You do not have a clue what you are talking about as usual

I think many people consider themselves to be lucky living in such a beautiful place - obviously you don't......
I make a simple INNOCENT comment - ever heard the words "attitude problem"????

Both the sea temperature and the land temperature are slightly warmer in Guernsey and Jersey than they are in Alderney. Bigger land masses and shallower waters help make the difference. But serenity and peacefulness can't be beaten in Alderney.

This might seem like a really silly question but do you need a passport to go to the Channel Islands? Will a photo driving license be sufficient?

Last time I was in Guernsey (many years ago) you didn't need one but it's probably advisable if you take your own boat. You're not far from French territorial waters and if you do have to pass through/stop off it could cause a problem. If you're unfortunate enough to run into French customs they were arseholes of the highest order-worse than ours- from my recollection.
Correct me if I'm wrong here please.

In Jersey you can normaly expect 16 degre sea temp, and 20+ air temp in july, we have lovely beaches and coves, lots of places to visit including maritime museme and a offshore (at high water) castle, you can can spend all day in the sun traped bays, and 10 miles of north cost head land foot paths to walk. hotels by the marina. www.jersey.com
there are lots of ribs in jersey showing there versatility for visiting the smaller islands including plateau des minquies and les ecrehou, sark etc. can't go wrong. also loads of very good restrants.
Nick
